Located at the busiest border crossing in North America, the Gordie Howe International Bridge between Windsor, Ontario and Detroit, Michigan is set to become a new symbol of the important partnership between Canada and the United States. Once complete, it will mark the first new major bridge between the two countries in over 60 years. With 37 years of experience, including 18 years with the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) of Transportation, Michael Girman has had a hand in some of the state’s most significant and complex transportation projects. He brings this expertise to his work as senior vice president and regional business line leader at AECOM, where he leads our teams and collaborates with stakeholders and government agencies to deliver transformational projects across the transportation market. One of the highlights of his career has been the I-95 reconstruction program, which he first became involved with during his time at PennDOT. We’re excited to share our selection by the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) to provide design services for Segment 3C-4 of the North Houston Highway Improvement Project, a planned multi-segment redesign of I-45N, between downtown Houston and the North Sam Houston Tollway.    Our scope of work for the project includes designing four express lanes, realigning I-45's six main lanes, and widening from one to four managed lanes from west of Houston Avenue to west of White Oak Bayou. This project aims to alleviate traffic congestion, enhance commuter safety and improve flood resiliency, and will include drainage system improvements intended to allow the roadway to be functional during extreme weather events.    “Our team has a deep understanding of the region’s infrastructure needs and a strong track record of successful collaborations with TxDOT. As a technical leader with our Canada region, Gord Geoffrey is no stranger to the intricacies of large-scale infrastructure projects. His success in complex civil engineering works has allowed him to lead major infrastructure investments across Calgary, which span roads and highways to light rail transit and water and wastewater treatments plants.    One of his favorite projects has been the North Calgary Water Servicing study, which aimed to develop solutions to reduce the city’s reliance on a single, older water transmission line. We’re redefining sports venues with the Nansha Sports Complex in Guangzhou, expanding tech hubs with Stephen Suen’s Cyberport Expansion in Hong Kong, creating exemplary open public spaces with Trevor Boobyer’s Gold Coast Greenheart in Australia and increasing capacity to serve more patients more effectively in London with Jason Pearson’s Ambulatory Diagnostic Centre. Over years of collaboration, we’ve helped the City of Edmonton build out its light rail system — today one of North America’s busiest. Now this leading network is set to expand still further as we partner with Capital Line Design-Build Ltd. to deliver the City’s Capital Line South Light Rail Transit Extension project. Located in Alberta, Canada, the project includes a 4.5-kilometer light rail extension from Century Park to north of Ellerslie Road, two new stations and a light rail vehicle storage and maintenance facility. In this week’s Deep Dive, we hear from Josh Jones, a program manager from our Transportation business in Canada. Josh has over 20 years of experience in construction and management of large-scale infrastructure projects. He currently leads a team of nearly 20 multi-disciplinary professionals, using his decades of experience to develop and execute complex public-private partnership (P3) projects.    One of the highlights of his career has been serving as project manager for the Valley Line LRT in Edmonton, western Canada’s largest LRT owner’s engineer assignment and Edmonton’s first P3 project. Josh and his team worked not only with city staff, but also with AECOM’s global network of experts, bringing specialized knowledge from around the world, to successfully deliver the project. Today, the Valley Line provides Edmonton’s population of over a million with affordable access to public transit, expanding connectivity across the city while decreasing car dependency and eliminating an estimated 5,340 metric tons of greenhouse gases annually.
