The downside is that children with disabilities were denied a free and appropriate education which gives them legal protection in school! However, the bright side is that so many children with disabilities STILL moved the needle and reached their short and long term goals even before the IEP was put into place! Imagine how much better it would be if parents and students understood the entire IEP process along with the legal safeguards that are in place! A match made in heaven! If you or someone you know needs help with the IEP process, have them visit www.advocatebaltimore.com 🤍🎈

Through this book, my goal is to help families make sense of Individualized Education Programs and 504 plans in order to be more equipped to navigate each process. Since IEPs and 504s are not written in plain language, it is my charge to make sure that families understand the purpose of these plans, the laws that cause these plans to come into effect, and the importance of parental and familial involvement throughout the process. I want to make sure that families better understand the process and evaluation as a whole and offer resources to encourage and empower individuals to advocate for their child’s educational needs. #advocacymatters #advocacy #specialeducationadvocate https://lnkd.in/eCc6wibH

MEET THE ADVOCATE: My name is Shawna McMillan. I hold a Bachelors of Art in English Language and Literature and a Masters of Science in Education with a Special Education concentration. I am certified in Special Education in grades kindergarten through 12 and have always had a passion for education and student growth. In my time acting as IEP Chair/Case manager, I was responsible for leading and coordinating the development and implementation of IEPs for students with special education needs. I collaborated with various stakeholders and fostered a supportive environment for students with diverse learning requirements. I am thrilled to one day become the leading Special Education Advocate in the Greater Baltimore area. 🤍🎈 #advocatebaltimore #specialeducation #swd #studentswithdisabilities #advocacy #eductionadvocate
