Millions of people across the world are paying the harsh price of surveillance technology under the guise of "protecting national security." The use of automated decision-making and surveillance technology perpetuates structural oppression, discrimination, and exclusion of migrant and racialised people. Journey with us as we begin, "Digital Surveillance at Europe’s Edges: a Greek Case Study." Fighting for human rights in the digital age
About us
Access Now defends and extends the digital rights of people and communities at risk. As a grassroots-to-global organization, we partner with local actors to bring a human rights agenda to the use, development, and governance of digital technologies, and to intervene where technologies adversely impact our human rights. By combining direct technical support from our 24/7 Digital Security Helpline, strategic advocacy, grassroots grantmaking, and convenings such as RightsCon, we fight for human rights in the digital age.

The CBP One mobile app raises major red flags for migrants, asylum seekers, refugees, and other people on the move Almost two years later, and after our lawsuit, the US Customs and Border and Protection (CBP) finally released information about its mobile application. As we prepare to review and assess the quality of the newly released documents we invite partners interested to collaborate with us. Read more on the ongoing situation and our upcoming efforts:

One year into the war on Gaza, digital rights violations are still on the rise, spilling over into the offline world. Internet shutdowns, censorship, and surveillance enabled by corporate actors, including potential complicity, were all used as weapons of war, exacerbating the suffering of millions in Gaza. We continue to demand a physical and digital ceasefire. Learn more: https://lnkd.in/dqkf7TBz

A couple of weeks ago, Access Now hosted a session at the eleventh edition of the Collaboration on International ICT Policy for East and Southern Africa (CIPESA's) Forum on Internet Freedom in Africa (#FIFAfrica24) on responsibility of tech companies in protecting human rights during conflict. We explored how narratives around internet shutdowns and data governance in Sudan can help understand what the future of digital rights holds with the prospect of more zones of conflict. It was great to moderate the session with Aliou Diouf from Business & Human Rights Resource Centre, Eiman Kheir from Meta, Montserrat Legorreta from Global Network Initiative, and my colleague Isedua Oribhabor from Access Now to dissect this very important topic. Some key takeaways from our session were: 1. Tech companies cannot be neutral when it comes to advancing human rights; 2. They must take swift and equal action to protect and respect human rights across all regions, particularly, in times of conflict; 3. Multi-stakeholderism is key in tackling identified challenges and devising solutions in the digital space; and 4. Solidarity and collaboration are a driver in advancing human rights.

We’re back with the final part of our “Digital Surveillance at Europe’s Edges: a Greek case study.” This episode dives into the “dystopian nightmare” of the Closed Controlled Access Center on the island of Samos — one of five such centres in Greece — where EU policies fuel a surveillance state and systemic violence against migrants. From biometric IDs to surveillance cameras and drones, the technologies deployed in these centres push marginalised people further to the edges. Find out more about the current state of border surveillance on Samos and what action we want EU policymakers to take here: ⬇️ https://lnkd.in/ehb5Hq8W

Egyptian authorities must not delay and deny justice any more — #FreeAlaa now! This September 29 marks the end of Alaa Abd el-Fattah’s five-year sentence, but alarming reports now suggest a delay until January 2027. Over an excruciating decade and a half, Alaa has been in and out of jail, separated from his son and family under a prejudiced and unfair sentence for daring to speak up against an oppressive regime. With FairSquare, Tahrir Institute for Middle East Policy, and 56 organizations, we call on Egyptian authorities to stop cracking down on free speech — online and off — and #FreeAlaa this Sunday, once and for all!

We’re back with part two of our “Digital Surveillance at Europe’s Edges: a Greek Case Study.” This episode takes us to Greece’s Evros region where we learn about how EU-funded research projects are legitimising violent migration policies, and we cannot sit idly by. Border surveillance technology is deployed on safety grounds, even as migrants’ human rights are violated.
