About Abundant Housing L.A. California is in the midst of a housing crisis. Decades of resistance to new housing, especially in coastal communities, have resulted in unbearably high rents, worsened inequality, and displacement of low-income residents. Los Angeles County especially needs much more housing, for people of all incomes, near our growing transit system and major employment centers, if we ever hope to reverse these trends. Abundant Housing LA is committed to education and advocacy on the affordability, livability, and sustainability benefits of more housing. We want lower rents and a more sustainable and prosperous region, where everyone has more choices of where to live and how to pursue their dreams. Density, when well planned, can enhance the social and economic life of the city. We do educational outreach for policies, plans, and individual projects that improve the lives of all. We welcome anyone who shares these goals to join us.

Last Thursday, Governor Newsom signed AB 2667, Abundant Housing LA's first successful piece of sponsored legislation! AB 2667 strengthens Affirmatively Furthering Fair Housing by establishing clear reporting standards, increases transparency in the Site Inventory process, and requires jurisdictions to report annually on where new housing units are being permitted and built. AHLA is grateful for the partnership of our co-sponsor, Inner City Law Center, the impactful research and collaboration of Paavo Monkkonen and Aaron Barrall, as well as the leadership of the bill's author, Assemblymember Miguel Santiago!

Excited to share my recent op-ed in Next City, co-authored with Awoenam Mauna-Woanya and Chris Tokita, PhD, where we advocate for infill housing as a critical solution to L.A.'s climate and housing crises. ++ On a personal note, I studied urban planning because I believe cities hold the key to a sustainable future. Urban neighborhoods, especially those with walkable streets and excellent public transit, consume fewer resources and generate less greenhouse gas emissions on a per capita basis than suburban and exurban areas. I moved to New York City in 2009 to join the Bloomberg Administration's efforts to create a Greener, Greater New York. Six years ago I relocated to Los Angeles, in part because I saw its immense potential to become a model for sustainability. Our city and region have made significant progress in air quality, renewable energy, building decarbonization, transportation electrification, and more. However, one area that hasn't received nearly enough attention is infill development, despite land use being the most powerful climate tool local governments have. A big part of what makes infill challenging, of course, is that the highest opportunity neighborhoods are often the ones that resist change the most. This issue needs to be at the forefront of the local agenda, just as urban housing supply was thrust into the national conversation at the DNC last week.
