Today we celebrate an important and exciting milestone as the STEMI DTU Pivotal study completes enrollment with 527 ITT subjects enrolled. This achievement is a testament to the dedication and commitment of each enrolling site to advancing the science of unloading during an acute MI. Thank you!

Tyson Green is a husband, father, and back-end computer coder from Las Vegas, Nevada, and another of the patients that was gracious enough to join us as we celebrated 25 years of Impella this year. On July 5, 2023, Tyson went into cardiac arrest while helping his local fire department extinguish a fire on his street. He was rushed to Sunrise Hospital and Medical Center where Dr. Swetal Patel implanted Impella CP to support his heart before placing stents in his LAD. After one day of support, Impella CP was weaned and removed and he was able to return home to his family four days later. Tyson received an Outstanding Citizen Award for helping his local firefighters.

While visiting Abiomed's HQ during our recent celebration of #Impella 25, patient Shirley Polk met with the team that worked on the specific pump that was used in her treatment. Shirley is a mother, wife, and avid cyclist from Raleigh, North Carolina. After a scheduled C-section for her second child on November 8, 2017, Shirley developed peripartum cardiomyopathy and went into cardiogenic shock. Dr. Islam Othman, interventional cardiologist at Duke Health, evaluated Shirley and placed the Impella CP heart pump to allow her heart to rest and recover. She was then transferred to Duke University Hospital for a possible heart transplant. When physicians removed Impella after two days of support, her native heart had recovered enough to not require a transplant. Ten days later Shirley was able to leave the hospital and return home.

Rosa Walker is a wife, mother, and great grandmother from Hackensack, New Jersey, and one of the 25 patients who celebrated 25 years of Impella with Abiomed. After her husband, Jerome, suffered a heart attack in September 2022 and was treated by Dr. Haroon Faraz, she herself became a patient of Dr. Faraz. Rosa started to experience indigestion and thought it was acid reflux, but when her condition did not improve, she went to Hackensack University Medical Center in July 2023. Tests results showed severe coronary artery disease and that needed an immediate coronary intervention. Dr. Faraz determined Rosa was a candidate for a Protected PCI procedure with Impella. After implanting Impella, Dr. Faraz placed stents and only days later Rosa returned home.

Roderick "Rod" Shirley, 82, is a husband, father and grandfather from Tampa, Florida. In September 2023, Rod started to experience pain and swelling in his right leg. After the swelling continued to get worse in his leg, he decided to go to an imaging center where they discovered a severe blood clot. Rod was admitted at Advent Health Tampa for a thrombectomy but during the procedure he coded multiple times due to a pulmonary embolism. Soon after, Dr. Oliver Abela discovered Rod was in right heart failure and Dr. Abela implanted the Impella RP Flex to allow his heart to rest and recover. After three days of support, the Impella was weaned and removed and he was able to return home. We were lucky enough to have Rod with us recently for our #Impella25 celebrations!

A special thanks to Jerome Walker for being one of the 25 special guest patients at our #Impella25 celebration! Jerome is a husband, father and great grandfather from Hackensack, New Jersey. In September 2022, he started feeling ill and experienced shortness of breath. When he started to feel chest pain, his wife Rosa called 911. Paramedics transported Jerome to Hackensack University Medical Center where Dr. Haroon Faraz implanted the Impella CP heart pump to allow his heart to rest before placing stents. After three days of support, Jerome’s heart function improved and Impella was weaned and removed.

Jessica Grib is a wife and mother from St. Louis, Missouri. During the last few weeks of her second pregnancy, the 30-year-old went to Mercy Hospital in St. Louis, Missouri, with high blood pressure. After physicians performed an emergency C-section, Jessica developed postpartum cardiomyopathy and went into cardiogenic shock. Dr. Tim Schloss implanted Impella CP to support Jessica’s weak heart. She was transferred to Barnes-Jewish Hospital where physicians also placed Jessica on ECMO support. After days of support, Jessica’s heart function recovered enough to function on her own and both devices were removed. She returned home to her loving family after three weeks in the hospital. She was another of the amazing patients who visited our Danvers office for our #Impella25 celebration!
