Know an author of an outstanding paper published in the Research Articles or Reports sections of Science? Nominations are closing soon for the 2025 AAAS Newcomb Cleveland Prize. Submit your nominations now: https://brnw.ch/21wKXqr An interdisciplinary team of more than 80 researchers led by Indigenous scholars received the 2024 AAAS Newcomb Cleveland Prize for an article that showcased findings about the rapid spread of horses through Indigenous societies in North America. Their paper, “Early dispersal of domestic horses into the Great Plains and Northern Rockies” was published in the March 31, 2023 issue of Science. The AAAS Newcomb Cleveland Prize, supported by The Fodor Family Trust, was established in 1923 and is awarded annually to the author or authors of an outstanding paper published in the Research Articles or Reports sections of Science. Recipients of the award, the oldest awarded by AAAS, collectively receive $25,000.

She shared her work on Instagram, launching #MicrobeMondays and later #MicroMartes. Through her crafting and social media engagement, Porras has reached groups historically underrepresented in microbiology—women and U.S.-based Spanish speakers. For her work, Ana Maria Porras received the 2024 AAAS Early Career Award for Public Engagement with science, which recognizes early-career scientists and engineers who demonstrate excellence in their activities that engage the public with science.

Last night, I had the privilege of joining Ambassador Shigeo Yamada to celebrate the International Human Frontier Science Program Organization and to promote the Japan-US partnership for frontier research in the life sciences. Science is a global enterprise. This collaboration has delivered Nobel prizes and - more importantly - better health for the people of Japan, the US, and the rest of the world! I look forward to its continued success.
