You're facing a complex software architecture. How do you decide which new technologies to incorporate?

In such situations, the first rule of thumb is to understand the market needs by empathising with the stakeholders already onboard (if possible go external). Furthermore, I want to point out one valuable skill that all developers MUST have, Requirement Engineering. I often came across developers who got frustrated over the clients' ongoing changes. The developers are awesome at their work, the client has the vision. So where is the problem? Communication. Understanding the requirements in the form of user stories or direct communication must be elicited. Sometimes the clients have blurred vision of what they want, we have to extract it out. Understanding requirement engineering will help to make it more vivid.

Additional considerations: 1. Vendor lock-in: Will adopting this technology limit our flexibility? 2.Compatibility with existing tools: Does it integrate with our current development tools? 3.Documentation and support: Is extensive documentation and support available? 4.Case studies and success stories: Have similar projects successfully implemented this technology? 5.Roadmap and future development: Is the technology actively maintained and improved? By carefully evaluating these factors, you can make a well-informed decision about which new technologies to incorporate into your complex software architecture, ensuring a successful and sustainable solution.

When we brought in a new capability to modify data more drastically in our safety-critical software, we needed a new logging method as the text-based logger would be too heavy based on my benchmarks. I ended up choosing Message Pack as: * yes it's ~5 times as slow as ProtoBuf, but it's still ~100 times faster than the text logger we had and (this is key!) * I was able to write a C macro (wild!) to call on any C++ struct to generate the Message Pack serialization and deserialization boilerplate for all of our structs in ~50 LOC I knew we already had a large codebase, so choosing an option where nobody's else's code had to change and we could incrementally improve logging over time by swapping to Message Pack was super important!
