What is the role of active listening in interpersonal communication assessment?

To understand the term "Active Listening" one needs to recollect the very basic concept of communication topic that hearing and listening both are different, though it's a very basic concept and most probably because of that only we tend to overlook it and we just hear instead of listening. Hearing involves only intake of sound whereas listening involves intake of that sound along with retaining and processing the message involved in that sound.

Active listening is one of the best ways to really be present in conversations and form true connection. The focus should be on the speaker, really hearing them and engaging with what they are saying. Instead of hanging on every word to respond, hang on their words to understand their view and where they are coming from. Repeating back what you hear them saying is a great way to show them you heard them, and if you didn't hear what they were intending to say, it allows them a chance to clarify so there are no misconceptions of what's being shared. It's an amazing tool that isn't used often enough!

Though active listening is an important aspect of any communication but you can't miss active listening specially when you are involved in an important or meaningful conversation otherwise if you don't follow active listening then surely you'll miss important details and pointers and ultimately your efforts and time put in that conversation would be waste.

Active listening is a learned behaviour. One that requires instinct above practice. The best way to instil an instinct like this is to start with the basics. Build patience. Start engaging in the same conversations that you do but slowly reduce your involvement verbally and lend your ear. Make the person infront of you feel heard through non verbal cues as well as little verbal nudges. Take the two steps and compound via experience. A few things will happen : • You will understand things better • Your communication skills improve • Your patience levels will increase in other areas as well.

There's an interesting concept in co-active coaching which can extend to all conversations, which is the "three levels of listening" Level one is listening to yourself, level two is intensely focused on the other person, and level three is focused on the other person with a wider focus, picking up on body language and tone, and the context. When we "read a room" we are listening to level three.
