What are effective ways to talk to patients about sensitive health topics?

For any good visit, knowing history enriches the care. For sensitive topics, I like to search everything I can to find context (job loss, history of trauma, etc) and prior relevant visits to help me develop more specific, helpful questions for the visit.

I think foremost you have to ensure the person of your confidentiality and explain which are the situations when it will be breached.(ex. medical emergency, life treating information provided)

Patients want and deserve to be heard, understood, and their feelings validated. Active listening on the part of the provider is integral to approaching a sensitive health conversation. When with patients, avoid interrupting; reflect on their concerns to build trust. Non-verbal cues matter—nod and maintain eye contact. Seek clarification if needed. These steps will boost accurate diagnosis, patient satisfaction, and psychosocial support. Time may be tight, but prioritizing this skill makes a world of difference.

I would add, to let them know that they can ask questions from you as a therapist as well, of course in certain limits. This is a beautiful way of saying to them that they have the right to don't answer questions that they don't want to,and we can avoid misinformation, as some rather lie than express a need for confidentiality. This opens up a 2 way communication and facilitates a more honest,open communication. I prefer to have a conversation rather than a clinical patient intake.

Patients have a lot of information to absorb at appointments with clinicians. Patient find it helpful to have resources for more information (i.e. a deeper dive on topic) or even sources to re-state what you’ve already shared with them, so they can more fully absorb on their own timeline. And ASK IF THEY HAVE ANY QUESTIONS. Let them know how to contact you if they have any questions at a later date.

I agree with you. Also offering the option to contact the healthcare professionals later on (if possible) with further questions is a soothing option, mostly in serious cases.

Patients often find value in hearing from others who have been through the same decision making process. Online patient communities, such as Patients Like Me, can be immensely helpful in terms of decision making and not feeling so alone in their journey.

Agree with you 💯! We can't use the same strategy for everyone even if is the same issue as we are all different! I think here the interpersonal competences of the therapist come to light! The on line community is a good support as long as the patient understands that what worked for someone doesn't give the same result to him/her.

I found it helpful to have a conversation where they can identify the reasons why they would not be able to implement the changes and guide the conversation in a way they can find the answers and solutions for themselves. It empowers the person as they came up with the solutions and inspires to action. Doesn't always work,but most of the time is successful strategy.

One of the best questions any one person can ask to address all of these areas is by starting with “what do you think about…” or “tell me more about what (blank) looks like for you”. It’s the same with a parent child relationship. Often times a child can ask a question and we begin talking way over their head or answering with more information than they really needed. Establish your baseline with your patient. They may know way more than you think they do or you may be reading further into their question. No matter how sensitive the subject you automatically building rapport by understanding what they know, and what they think about it. That’s always the best place to start and you can never go wrong with that question.
