Bias-Variance Tradeoff: In order to benchmark any model. It must possess best tradeoff between misclassification error and complexity. Highly complex model (overfitting) causes (low bias) which doesn't capture well on real data, which is a problem of (high variance). Simple model doesn't fit well on training (underfitting) causing high bias. So Model is given a green flag if low bias and low variance. That's where Bias-Variance Tradeoff comes into picture. Regularization is one of the ways to achieve that.

Supervised vs unsupervised... In my practice, it is wise to have both models going, because sometimes if the unsupervised model fits better, the supervised one needs to be looked at again.
