Speaking out of my experience. I have been working from home for more than 3 years now. In my current company which I am very thankful for. We have a regular meeting twice a week or as needed if there are important updates and announcements within the team and/or organization. One thing that I admire with my direct report Manager is that, I don't need to inform her when I am already logged in and when I am logging out, the trust that she gave me made me more responsible and productive. What I have seen work really well is having a centralized location where the changes can be read by the team and can also be referred back to. This is super helpful especially when there are multiple critical changes happening simultaneously. Once team members have read the changes, then a meeting for questions can be useful to ensure everyone is on the same page.

The best leaders I've worked with in a remote or hybrid capacity have been consistently transparent and clear communicators, open to individual needs of teams and ready to recognize individual and team wins. Having a regular cadence is essential and not changing it. If you constantly reschedule or cancel, you lose the trust of the teams. Also the repercussions on missing out the deadline as business can take him of some thing just because it was handled remotely. So virtual empathetic discussion not only pertaining to work but otherwise as well can help to take the relationship and work commitment to another level.

Ultimately, being on-site or remote isn’t relevant. During secure or unsure times shouldn’t matter either. We need to keep the team connected and make them feel supported. We can do this through regular meetings and encouraging collaboration and interaction. Above all, being transparent with the team at all times builds trust during uncertainty.

If you have a good relationship with your team, whether they are remote or hybrid or on-site shouldn't matter. You can still support them. I managed a fully remote team but we had a good Relationship with regular 1:1s during which they had my undivided attention to discuss whatever was on their minds.

You manage them the same way you manage on-site employees. Be transparent, lay out expectations and goals, commit to them, and communicate frequently. Build a base of trust. Trust is given when the employee is hired, not 'earned' through future performance.
