Here's how you can excel at delivering impactful presentations: key skills and qualities executives need.

While many factors influence how good your presentation goes, one tops the list - subject knowledge. I could be a great orator but if I am not familiar with the topic I am taking about, my confidence will waver. The solution? Read and Prep! Read your presentation, read what you are presenting about, read all you can related to your topic and you will be able to fluently deliver while holding audience interest. Prep before your presentation on what exactly you'll say. Now, I don't mean a proper script with your pauses also planned out. We don't want it staged. But do make a note of key pointers you need to cover. In case of hitch, all you have to do is glance and you will be back on track.

A successful presentation begins with having knowledge about the subject beyond the contents of your presentation. One of the most important traits of effective speakers is that they are aware of what they speak and can engage in meaningful discussions around the material. Before stepping in front of your audience : 1. Research the topic beyond the scope of your narrative 2. Prepare short notes/flashcards to keep yourself on track 3. Anticipate some possible questions and practice relevant responses 4. If possible, seek discussions with some experts in that particular field

Thorough knowledge of your subject matter instills confidence and authority, allowing you to present with clarity and conviction. When you deeply understand your topic, you can anticipate questions, provide detailed explanations, and address any uncertainties from your audience. This expertise enables you to distill complex information into easily digestible insights, making your presentation more engaging and impactful. It is important to know your stuff, and it is also important to remember that people make most decisions based on emotions, so you have to speak to the logic and emotion during your presentation. Include these things: * Why is it a problem? * How is it going to make their life easier and/or better? * How will the situation look in the future if they utilize what you are sharing with them? When you take these steps and effectively do them, you are more likely to compel your audience to take your desired action.

There's nothing like knowing your stuff. An audience member can sense if the presenter has prepared for their presentation. While you shouldn't memorize, you should bullet key points to keep you on track. Without reading from the slides, summarize and leave the interpretation up to the audience. After all, that is when your insight is most impactful.

Captivating your audience requires active involvement, both from you and them. Start by connecting with your listeners through eye contact, relatable anecdotes, and interactive elements such as questions or polls. Your enthusiasm and energy should be palpable, as they are contagious and help maintain attention. Fully engaging also means being present and responsive, adapting your delivery based on audience feedback and reactions. To use story, it's important that you understand the tool and why you are using it. Story humanizes you, the brand, the message, and the people you are talking to. This allows you the ability to create trust and emotional connection with your listener, and this leads to them being more motivated to listen. Treat story as an instrument that you will use in many ways. Don't just take one lesson. Master the instrument and it will serve you well to help master the moments that matter.

Storytelling to executives can be tough. Their attention spans are short and they only have time to find out 'what is in it for them.' You need to get their attention quickly and keep it by speaking their language. You will need to research your audience before you create your presentation. What are their goals and focus for the business? If you talk about the details of your investigation you will lose them. If you instead focus on the impact on the business or the financial impact on the bottom line, you should get and keep their focus. Create a story sharing what you believe they are thinking and how the future will look once the changes you are suggesting are implemented. Be prepared and you can be successful.

Regular practice helps refine your delivery, solidify your content, and boost your confidence. By rehearsing, you can identify and correct weaknesses, ensuring smoother transitions and a more natural flow. Practice also allows you to experiment with different techniques, such as varying your tone, pacing, and body language, to find what resonates best with your audience. Additionally, familiarizing yourself with your material reduces anxiety, enabling you to focus on engaging your listeners. Consistent practice transforms your presentations from good to exceptional, ensuring clarity, confidence, and impact.

Presenting to the executive level & above takes a different approach from lower management levels. First, prepare for the time you are given but always break it into chunks with a priority of importance. If time runs out or you get questions you ensure you hit the big stuff up front. Also, prepare an elevator speech version, which gives a highlight to pique their interest enough to give you more time. Last but not least plan for questions, including time for them throughout your presentation. But, don't let questions derail the presentation, follow the 3 rules. 1. Quickly answer a question if you know the answer. 2. If you don't know the answer, say 'I don't know but I will let you know by when...' 3. Ask do you have any other questions

Know your audience and stand your ground. You have a mission and that is to present your information to those in the room. Stick to your story, many time questions will arise that might derail you from the topic at hand, do your best to answer but always rely on the background you have and the answers you can give. Public speaking, especially in high level meetings takes time to learn your own personal way to communicate the message. Stick to your message. After action is critical. Reach out to individuals in the meeting for real feedback, individual feedback will allow you to gain knowledge from different perspectives. Lastly, never give up and never feel down. These individuals have been there before, we are all human. Grow and grow!
