What do you do if you want to expand your understanding of leadership styles and approaches?

What has been a game changer for me and why I do what I do today is taking the time to understand each other’s strengths. We all have different strengths and how we see the “best” way to approach work. Most of us flock to work with people who are just like us when we end up missing out on leveraging someone else’s strength that can bring a better way of doing things. I loved what it taught me so much that I learned ended up going to get certified with Gallup so I could do this work with my own leadership teams and here I am today. I’m addicted and am so much more energized and productive because of it!! 😊

Agree 100% - Leaders are readers. This is an intentional use of time to stay current and relevant, while intellectually exploring new or contrasting ideas. This continual focus on personal growth and self-development allows your beliefs to grow, expand and evolve, versus “thinking you have it all figured out”. Every time we read with the intention to understand and explore we’re making an investment in our growth. Also good to note that if you want to internalize concepts do more than read books - study them. I find taking the time while reading to make notes (iPhone Notes) on key concepts greatly improves my retention and makes these notes accessible any time for sharing or review.

There is no better way to learn than to watch experienced leaders in action. If you are lucky to have a mentor, boss, or someone you respect and would like to emulate, I would start there. If you don't have a leader to observe, ask questions, or engage with, ask your peers who they consider to be a great leader. Reach out to those people and ask for a few minutes of their time. Explain your goal to learn more. I assure you they would be happy to give a few minutes if not more to offer some advice! Aside from real-life examples, there are plenty of other options to get a broad view of different types of leadership styles such as books, podcasts, and videos to help you get started.

If I want to enhance my understanding of leadership styles, I would actively seek out successful leaders who have approaches different from my own. I would aim to observe, interview, and learn from them if possible. In cases where direct interaction is not feasible, I would read their published works and engage with them on social media platforms. Analyzing specific projects they have led successfully would help me learn diverse approaches. This strategy is aimed at enriching my leadership repertoire with known successful approaches and expanding the range of styles I can use in the future.

Work in as many contexts as possible to see the array of styles and challenges that present themselves. Working with an array of leaders in such contexts to view innovative and effective practices. Being self reflective and experimental in your own approach, as you critically analyse the styles and effectiveness of others.

Understanding of other's leadership qualities is not just copy and paste but communicate, see how they think and analyze, how they handle others and handle challenges. We need to understand what is the impact of their leadership at the first place. Be open and broad minded when you communicate with a leader, people come with different mindsets and leadership qualities, how we adapt them in a good way in our leadership will bore the right results. This will also help us to find different approaches in leadership!!

One thing I’ve found helpful is making a calendar too meet regularly with mentors and prepare questions ahead of the meeting to be more effective. Mentors are great to help you navigate the challenges in the corporate world. Use them wisely.

the plural 'mentors' is the most important thing to note here. Don't just look at the people you most admire - or get 5 of the exact same kind of person because all you are doing is confirming your own bias. You need to see how different leaders operate with different people to get a really thorough understanding of what works for you and for them. One style doesn't work for every person. You need to be able to change it up when people require different things. Expand don't limit.

At least once in a one month, I used to meet my senior people or engage with their recent videos or podcast. Mentors provide valuable insights based on their experience, helping you navigate real-life situations. Their different viewpoints tells different leadership models, helping you develop a more comprehensive approach. Look for mentors whose styles you connect with, build a relationship based on trust and respect. Take advantage of the chance to learn from their successes and obstacles, applying their knowledge to your own leadership journey. With mentors guiding you, you set out on growth, expanding your leadership in meaningful ways.

When starting a new job, I actively seek out projects that offer opportunities to work with seasoned company leaders. Building a relationship with a mentor is vital for personal and professional growth. A mentor should provide constructive feedback, offer alternative perspectives, and help overcome challenges by providing useful resources. I have had several mentors over my career, but I consider myself fortunate to have had one mentor who has provided support and guidance for over a decade.

Look for mentors, not just some fancy title. Seek out leaders you genuinely admire, those whose style resonates with you. These could be people within your company, industry leaders you follow online, or even historical figures whose leadership you find fascinating. Engage in open conversations. Ask them about their leadership journeys, the challenges they faced, and the strategies they used to overcome them. You'll gain real-world insights that textbooks can't offer.

One thing that has been particularly helpful is gaining exposure to senior leaders from various teams. The rationale behind engaging with leaders from different teams is that each team operates with unique dynamics and performance levels, allowing for a deeper understanding of different leadership styles and approaches. While accessing senior leaders may not be easy for everyone, it’s essential to build rapport and build an image that will facilitate such interactions.

I have often found it useful to reflect frequently at my own style and understand the impact and the outcomes it has had. During my reflection I also make note of observing others and how they have navigated similar situations which I can incorporate to have the desired outcomes. This has helped me improve and adapt continuously.

Take time to watch and listen to others and how they influence and lead. Then reflect on your own style, the impact you have and the outcomes (how engaged are your team, how did your stakeholders react, how clear is your vision). What can you learn from others, what is a natural progression from your leadership style, what can you dial up or down to have a greater impact and to be a more effective leader?

In my leadership journey, I've found that reflection is a powerful tool for growth and self-awareness. As a neuroscientist, I'm fascinated by the brain's ability to rewire itself through experience and reflection. To make reflection a consistent practice, I: ✍️ Keep a journal (key decisions, challenges, lessons learned). Revisiting it helps me identify patterns and areas for improvement. 🧘♂️ Set aside dedicated time for reflection, whether it's a daily meditation practice or a weekly review of my goals and progress. 💡 Seek feedback from my team and peers, using their insights as a mirror to reflect on my leadership effectiveness. In the fast-paced world of leadership, slowing down to reflect is not a luxury, but a necessity.

While reflecting on your own individual experiences, observe leaders around you to understand which attributes you like about them that you'd like to embrace, and those that don't resonate with you. No one is perfect and leadership is an ongoing learning journey. Some leadership traits that work well for most in their leaders are transparency and integrity - in good and 'not so good' times.

As mentioned, you can get more insights into the nuances of leadership only through commitment and compassionate practices helping and enabling the others achieve their life's missions. Not everything would go right as per your plans, however meticulously crafted. You need to "reflect and introspect" on your past experiences to recall what went wrong and what went right. It's a good idea to keep a diligent record of details of every leadership opportunity and how and what you learnt through each of them.

I was faced with the challenge of turning around a loss-making branch and transforming it into a profit zone. I initially approached the situation with traditional strategies but soon realized that I needed to think differently to achieve the desired results. I began to reflect on the challenges facing the branch, including low customer engagement, inefficient processes, and a demotivated team. Through reflection, I was able to identify areas for improvement and develop innovative strategies to address them. I implemented new customer engagement initiatives, streamlined processes, and implemented a motivational program for my team.As a result of my reflective approach,we could surpass the targeted profit zone and post a phenomenal growth.

Attending workshops doesn't have to be the run of the mill standard workshops within your organisation. There are tons of presentations, events, panel discussions out there - in person ideally, but also on-line. There is a real breadth of experience available, not just the 'mandatory' HR led leadership stuff your organisation makes you do. It's worth seeing what local networking groups offer as there are always different presenters and facilitators who will be giving examples of leadership styles and experience.

Workshops can be excellent of course; but in order to gain real knowledge of your own leadership style; develop potentially better skills and ultimately a peak performing team, working in a group alongside peers is important. Having open and honest discussions, learning from each other and providing peer to peer coaching can be beneficial to all.

I'm a very introspective person, so naturally I always reflect on my own leadership style. I'm constantly assessing if I need to tweak it in anyway based on my team, changes in the environment or expectations at work. I'm very intentional about being flexible in my thought process and leadership style. When I'm not reflecting, I'm absorbing various ways to lead through others. I use their examples and take pieces that I appreciate and add them to my toolbox. When I'm stuck or my current style isn't working, I engage colleagues and my own leadership for guidance and support.

What you are to do is to meet and dine with people that are beyond you in reasoning, thinking and research. Definitely, you would make a great leader through that means .

There's always scope for betterment, however hard you work on acquiring nuances of leadership practices. "Learning is a lifelong process", with various options available. You can enrol in in-person courses, attend workshops, conferences, seminars and webinars. Besides learning from accomplished humans, you can learn a lot from the environment around us. Daunting situations always offer 'leadership opportunity" that you should readily grab and make the best out of every such situation.

Building Relationships, Not Just Collecting Contacts: Focus on Quality Over Quantity: Actively networking is about building meaningful connections with people you share interests or goals with. Aim for quality conversations rather than collecting a large number of superficial connections. Initiate Conversations: Don't wait to be approached. Take the initiative to introduce yourself, ask questions, and find common ground. Be a Giver, Not Just a Taker: Actively networking is about offering value to others. Share your expertise, connect them with helpful resources, or offer genuine support.

Dealing with humans is the most complex assignment, as everyone is uniquely Created and evolved. For wider and in-depth experience, you need to enlarge your leadership network. Through participation in workshops, seminars, conferences you can associate with your peers. You can join professional organizations and be active in the affairs so you can interact with seniors in the leadership domains and benefit from associating with them.

Networking can be very beneficial. Networking provides opportunities to learn from others but can also assist in opening new doors for your career. Try to think outside the box and network with leaders from different industries. Leadership and leadership skills are universal but gaining a better understanding and perspectives from different industries opens the door to new ideas and ways you may lead.

Networking is an essential (must) activity for both established leaders and those in training. My preferred ways for networking are social media and technical events (online and in-person). Leaders should allocate specific times for networking in their agendas. Personally, I dedicate one hour each day to networking, engaging with both internal colleagues and external peers outside my company. Effective and reliable networking allows you to accelerate decision-making and execution processes.

Leverage professional networks to connect with industry peers, facilitating idea exchange and learning from diverse experiences, recognizing the significant impact of the external environment on leadership development.

Nothing will develop your leadership potential more than seeking out the thoughts, opinions, and experiences of successful leaders, hard workers, mentors, or even front line staff. Take everything with a grain of salt, but compare this information, "from the horse's mouth", with your own principles, techniques, and ethics. Then re-evaluate and use the main take-aways from other perspectives as applicable. You can stay relevant and learn things that may have taken others years to garner. Not to mention gaining or reinforcing relationships with the points of contact you utilize.

These interactions let me share my thoughts, challenge ideas, and explore what leadership means. Diversity in leadership involves listening to everyone, regardless of how they present their ideas/solutions to you and the team. By integrating all voices and emphasizing the strengths of each, we build respect and ensure that everyone is heard. As a leader, my first step is to avoid assuming that my approach and leadership style are superior. Instead, I allow myself to learn from all the perspectives within my team (I permit myself to be the worst and learn from all the voices in my team). In order to successfully do this, you really have to work at laying your own thoughts and conclusions down before you seek their input. Otherwise, your own lense of thought, will cloud the input.

As a Leader, you come across people of varying backgrounds, cultural values and personal beliefs. You need to embrace diversity of this highly heterogeneous groups. You need to choose an appropriate leadership style for maximizing the impact of your leadership efforts. What truly matters is how many your followers are enamored to emulate your leadership style to contribute to the betterment of our Society.

Embracing and valuing Diversity is required to understand different leadership styles.Whether it is to actively network, engage with mentors, read widely about leadership and to attend workshops, acknowledging the fact that everyone is different, their views, culture, values, beliefs are different and there is something to learn from these differences will greatly influence one's leadership style by breaking the biases and by enhancing emotional intelligence, a highly required skill in leadership.

Diversity in this context includes the now high profile forms of diversity ... ... AND .... all other forms too. People UNLIKE you add more value than people LIKE you. People with different backgrounds, at different stages of their careerr, from different industries with different business models and with different ownership structures make different assumptions and provide alternative perspectives to your own more than people like you will. Speaking personally as someone with a great education and an MBA, I learnt most as a business leader from engaging with people who left school at 16 with no qualifications and just did their thing. To my shame they taught me how to be 'streetwise' ... and I hope I taught them how to be strategic!

Understanding leadership styles and approaches helps in my own leadership development. But most successful leaders don’t always rely on their dominant style in leading. They are able to effectively adapt their style and approach to the situation and context, inspiring their audience to action. That makes communication a key ingredient of leadership. Effective communication helps leaders to be successful in what Franklin Covey states as the four essential roles of leadership namely, to inspire trust, create a vision and strategy, execute the strategy and coach their team by providing positive feedback to reinforce performance and help them to reach their own potential. I am also keen to learning from successful female and diverse leaders.

Beyond the aforementioned aspects, I can tell from my own experience, that coaching on the job has invaluable potential for personal growth and the expansion of one‘s skill set. Through continuously mirroring situations, refocusing the coachee‘s attention to their own feelings, core beliefs, motifs of action, and behaviours as well as regular feedback, they can expand their comfort zone. Prerequisites: psychological safety and non violent communication.

Don't be afraid to ask questions! With humility and genuine curiosity, whether the example is perceived as "bad" or "good," ask for insight regarding why someone/an organization leads and functions the way it does. You may not draw the same conclusions or agree with the execution, but there is nuance to be revealed when you dig in a bit for insight.

Leadership is a noble profession that enables you to bring out the best in the others for them to make them believe and achieve what they earlier thought was "impossible". Acquiring, building and nurturing leadership skills takes a long time and commitment. Every being is uniquely Created and evolved. It takes a of time, commitment and energy to bring coherence of purpose in such heterogeneous groups.

In my experience, you have to be open to different sources of information and look around for good examples that inspire you, and sometimes even challenge you. When it comes to leadership, there is no finish line. It is a forever-ongoing evolution, which makes it very interesting and rich.
