If you want to foster a more inclusive and respectful culture, you need to be aware of these differences and how to navigate them effectively. Here are some tips to help you improve your internal communications skills and bridge the socio-economic gaps in your team.

1 Acknowledge the diversity

The first step to navigate socio-economic differences is to acknowledge that they exist and that they matter. Don't assume that everyone has the same background, experiences, values, or needs. Recognize that people may have different perspectives, preferences, and expectations based on their socio-economic status. For example, someone who grew up in poverty may have a different attitude toward money, risk, or authority than someone who grew up in affluence. Be curious and open-minded about the diversity in your team and appreciate the strengths and challenges that each person brings.

It's a little bit more complex than acknowledging socio-economic privilege. For example in some Asian communities, this intersects or is determined by the class system, and arguably for everyone, socio-economic status is a cross-cutting and intersectional factor. For example, being Black and from a deprived community further impunes economic opportunities and results in much work outcomes in the justice system than other ethnic or gender groups. Being curious about diversity isn't enough, you need to welcome it. There may be tension or misunderstandings initially, but welcoming diversity means learning to embrace those differences and being open to what that brings to your team. Even within the same grouping, people have differing needs.

2 Avoid stereotypes and judgments

The second step to navigate socio-economic differences is to avoid stereotypes and judgments based on your own or others' socio-economic status. Stereotypes are generalizations that oversimplify and ignore the individuality and complexity of people. Judgments are evaluations that imply superiority or inferiority based on your own or others' socio-economic status. For example, you may stereotype someone as lazy, entitled, or greedy based on their income level, or you may judge someone as uneducated, uncultured, or unsophisticated based on their education level. These stereotypes and judgments can create bias, resentment, and conflict in your team. Instead of stereotyping and judging, try to understand and empathize with the person's situation, motivations, and goals.

If you want to move past Equality and Diversity and towards Equity & Inclusion, then you need to challenge stereotypes. They are by default and creation, lazy groupings that exist because they appeal to the human Pysche - the need for categories for everything and the need to establish hierarchy. Neither of these thingd are helpful. When you look at evidence etc, stereotypes do not apply universally and they do not hold up to scrutiny. Therefore one must challenge stereotypes, challenging the very tropes and what purpose they serve.

One shift I've found helpful is to approach each person with curiosity, instead of judgement. When I ask questions to deepen my understanding, I'm seeking to learn from someone else's experience and perspective. Curiosity creates an opportunity for my biases and stereotypes to be challenged; instead of judging, I'm open to expanding my perspective.

Respect means treating people with dignity and courtesy, regardless of their socio-economic status. Sensitivity means being aware of and adjusting to the different communication styles, norms, and expectations that people may have based on their socio-economic status. For example, you may need to adapt your language, tone, or format to suit the person's level of literacy, formality, or familiarity. You may also need to consider the person's access to technology, information, or resources when communicating with them. Communicate with respect and sensitivity to build trust and rapport with your team members.

You may also ask for feedback on how you can improve your communication or collaboration with them. Encourage dialogue and feedback to create a culture of learning and improvement in your team.
