I recently had an incubation where we ran into an incredible amount of issues. I kept delaying the investor update, hoping good news would come for the business that I could then share with the investors. 2 months past my due quarterly update, I finally had a phone call with an investor and shared the issues with him. He completely understood what was going on and offered to help bridge the company with $500K. I had been stressing for 2 months on where this $500K would come from, and he so freely gave it. The lesson I learned - your investors are trusted advisors. They want you to succeed and will most often help at all costs. Be open and transparent with them - you might be surprised for how they show up for you.

In one of my first start-ups, I learnt this lesson when one of my Angels brought to my attention the lack of formal updates. Sure, he was on the other side of the world, in a different TZ and English wasn't his first language- but now, that's really no excuse. Lately, investors have developed this guard: If a company isn't focused on a customer-centric operative plan, it often becomes tricky to help and support. It is vital to take a long-term approach and solidly focus on value creation rather than playing short-term trend-shifting games.

How someone handles and mitigates risks is super important. I remember seeing a fantastic investor update from a founder during COVID. The founder clearly outlined the challenges the company faces and how to address each one of them. I was really impressed by the email. Not only did this demonstrate her composure, but it also showed great leadership under difficult circumstances. Not surprisingly, the company successfully raised a round afterwards.

Working in early stage tech and innovation, there are many unknowns (that's part of the fun, right?!). Working in higher risk or less mature markets or regions also comes with its challenges. My preferred method is old school: A risk register with a probability & impact score. Draft a mitigation plan for any medium/medium-high risks. Keep it updated regularly, and share what you can with the stakeholders. Sure, the initial process of documenting the worst ever outcomes and risks can be demoralising at first, but getting them down on paper, scored, shared with mitigation strategies in place will serve to increase confidence in the project. In changing landscapes (due to macro conditions), being on top of your risks will put you ahead.

Updates are precious to the team and the investors to whom you are accountable for any volatility in your business. When a company posts about its performance, revenue, and operational updates periodically in a well-structured manner, it does two things: (a) helps the investors realize that you know what you are doing, (b) helps you realize where you, the team is heading and how to make necessary alterations. From personal experience, pivoting accounts for a great deal of how successful you could be when a market fluctuates, and the above process supports that decision in almost all cases.

When you come in to pitch to potential investors to hold onto them for the long term and extract value from their money to generate outsized returns - you tick the box for both of your goals. A founder wants to acquire the capital to boost their business. An investor wants to make an exit and eventually earn a substantial ROI; therefore, if you can balance out the turbulence of your business by not budging off from your vision, investors feel a sense of trust in their bet on you. They would certainly be encouraged to refrain from bothering you with market movements.

Don't think of your investors as people who have given you money; you need to return it to them with my ROI. When you flip this mental model and consider them part of the decision-making framework, they can collaborate and support you in making necessary amendments to ramp up your growth. Ensuring adequate communication is established between you and them, along with an altruistic sense of belonging, can propel your company forward.
