How do you determine the goals of a research project?

Research goals matter because they determine the depth of the research. They help with achieving and describing the final project. Goals should be set to ensure that completion is adequate. They can also help avoid any unnecessary research.

Research goals can be viewed as the foundation upon which you plan to build your house, in this case your research project or study. No one wants a shaky, unstable foundation. What I have found is that the simpler and the more concise your goal is, the easier it is for you to reach a definite conclusion in your research. It is always very tempting to try to combine several expected outcomes but always remember that the ultimate cost of your research (in terms of time, level of effort and budget) will ultimately be determined by the goal. No one wants to live in a house with so many corridors, doors and passages - it just gets tricky to get around and appreciate it's beauty.

Research goals matter because they give you a clear direction for investigation and hence positively impacting society and advancing the field.

I agree that goal has to come before the project, however you have to specify what it means to achieve this goal. Defining the scope really well and maintaining a Requirements Traceability Matrix are important ways to stay on track and accomplish precisely what you set out to do.

Research goals are good for setting up the expectations and thus measuring your outcomes against those expectations. Research goals should help in creating a framework around research but they shouldn't limit the researchers and enable them to go above and beyond the goals to pursue the scientific endeavors. Goals must be guiding but not restrictive as research enables free thinking and ability to think out of the box.

I agree with the values mentioned above for setting research goals but, for biological and medical research to be truly innovative the scientific community needs to be much more flexible. Guidelines and foundational data inform the next area of exploration, but it's extremely important to recognize that biologically, we still don't have the full picture: we don't know what we don't know. So even the best planned research approach may have caveats. As scientists we must be flexible and open-minded, not looking for data that fit our hypotheses, but observe results and be willing to accept when they don't support our hypotheses. This doesn't make us wrong/stupid/unsuccessful, it gives us more information and insights to refocus our approach.

Actually i disagree with this question. i think first goal is set and than research project is built on that. when one starts the research project, already goals are set for that project. After setting goals, research is started accordingly.

A researcher is like a hunter. What is to be hunted is like a researcher's goal. A hunter may not go to a forest any time of the day to any kind of bushes around with all kind of ammunition or none to hunt any kind of creature available. Which means a hunter without defining an animal to be hunted is like a researcher with out research goal. Hence, a researcher once defined an animal to be hunted / goal/ then determines tools , timing, with whom to cooperate with, size& numbers of huntees ... Therefore research goals matter most.

Like any project, a research goal is developed early in the conceptualization process. It is the problem to be solved or resolved; confusion to be clarified often determines the goal of a research project. It helps define the communication strategy or approach. It is like a north star – a guide. One can have a crude idea about the research goal; however, it evolves along the way. In other words, the research goal is the overall aim of a research project. It is typically stated in a single sentence that answers the question, "What do I want to achieve with this research?" The research problem is the specific issue or gap in knowledge that the research project is trying to address.

SMART is nice in principal, but specific tactics in the use of this framework can be a big vague. We prefer the OUtCoMES Cycle, as it has a highly structured roadmap, drawing on the best principles of PDCA, DMAIC, double diamond and other design thinking frameworks.

Discussions about SMART goals often seem to begin midway through the process. The SMART goals framework assumes the existence of predefined objectives and outcomes. However, this is frequently not the case. Some steps need to occur even before engaging in the framework. One of those is to develop a mindset of curiosity. That should be the starting point for any research project. Curiosity triggers the questions you are even willing to ask and shapes the larger scope of the research. Ensuring that there is organizational alignment should also be a preliminary step. It is crucial that all stakeholders have a common understanding of the metrics and parameters involved.

Be specific about your target. Setting measurable goals allows you to evaluate success or failure at the end. Setting a bar beyond your capacity and resources can set you up for failure... you need to be realistic about what you can achieve within the time frame you have. Say a graduate student with a funding limit of four semesters who went & set goals for 6 for his/her committee. This will portend trouble at the end. It is not enough to solve a problem, it better to solve a problem that has potential in the immediacy or in the near future. I already wrote about the critical factor of TIME.. to everything there is time.. a time to conduct research and a time to conclude the research & graduate or deliver to your customer or organization.

Prescribing to SMART goals, or something very similar in structure and purpose in research isn't just about setting benchmarks; it's about sculpting a pathway to discovery. Imagine SMART as a simple acronym and a control stick. Depending on what you plan to achieve, applying these criteria to your research goals can help you stick to the initial purpose for your research. Once the goal is clearly defined and SMART, it is easier to build upon that and define clear objectives, sub-objectives, outcomes, etc. The SMART framework is not meant to be the center stage of your study. It only helps to clearly define and describe your destination.

One useful guardrail that is useful is that specificity is different from sensitivity. In ensuring that research goals are specific, they should be written in such a way that you can clearly delineate a positive from a negative outcome. Using the example of "to reduce the prevalence of malaria among children under five in rural Uganda by 50% through the distribution of ITNs", we can be sure that achievement or non achievement of the result is distinguishable. Our focus is on under five children (not a vague population), prevalence of malaria (a specific measure and a specific disease), rural Uganda (a specific location), distribution of ITNs (a specific intervention). Will this objective alone prove that overall health is improved?

Ambiguity is the opposite of specificity... The success of a project impinges directly on the concise statement of its intended end goal. Many of us are afraid to assign a number to our expected output because of concern about bias evaluation from our assessors or how to handle the situation if our goal is not met. If I say I want to reduce the uptake in deep-fat fried foods by 50%, how do I justify that this is possible. This fear should not be a justification for ambiguity in our research goal statement. Being specific allows you to have a measurable goal.

Very commonly, there is the perception amongst young researchers that everything should be measurable. You just need the right indicator, tools and know-how. However, in research, you focus on the environment that you can control while keeping the purpose of the research in view. There can be no contribution to knowledge if it cannot be quantified AND verifiable.

To answer this question, one need to answer another question, "How do I know I am successful at the end?" What is the yardstick for measuring my success? Will you develop a method, will you advance specific understanding about a subject, and if so, by how much? How many publications are you targeting to publish and in what type of journal? How many students do you intend to train? What is the specific of what you want to achieve? Your goal should be measurable against a standard or a set point.

If you bite more than you can chew at a time you will gasp for breath and choke.... You need to count the resources available, the capacity within reach and the time you have at hand to determine your goals. However lofty your goals maybe, if it is not achievable, you will be deemed a failure....

Indeed, in a research study it is important not to be over ambitious or bite more than one can chew. Research must be feasible so setting a realistic and reasonably practicable study design goal is crucial. Financial cost and resources are important factors to always consider. Can you apply for additional funding to cover some of the cost? Also set personal goals relating to when you can complete different aspects of the research.

Create a timeline of activity. Set a time to frequently review your progress. Have supervisor, family or friend hold you accountable based on your schedule and timelines. Have a plan B almost always....
