1 - Gain as much practical experience as possible. 2 - Expereince as many different sectors & roles as possible. 3 - Networking is crucial, attend industry events to build connections. 4 - Specialise in a specific aspect and become as expert in that area. Staying informed about industry trends and developments is crucial. 5 - Strong communication skills is essential for effectively conveying solutions and building trust. 6 - Continuously update your knowledge and adapt to industry changes. By combining education, practical experience and networking. 7 - ASK ASK ASK - as many questions as you can and never stop trying to learn. Don't be afraid to challenge other peoples opinions (in a constructive manner). MOST IMPORTANT - BE POSITIVE!

This continuous learning will help you provide valuable insights to your clients. Obtain Certifications: Some agricultural consultants pursue certifications to enhance their credibility and expertise. Certifications may be available in areas like crop consulting, soil management, or sustainable agriculture. Specialize: Consider specializing in a specific area of agriculture, such as crop management, livestock production, sustainability, or agribusiness management. This can make you more marketable and knowledgeable in a particular niche.

In addition to formal education and training, you learn alot from the clients who have been on it for a long time than you. Therefore, in agricultural consultancy, you need to be open minded, learn from other people. In simple terms, don't be a know it all.

To be an Agronomist consultor it is not only to know about the specific matter, but is also about attitud and holistic understanding of phenomena, problems, factors and resources (people especially) involved and interactions between those. With this, a continuous improvement mindset will be key to process improvement in the organization.

After serving as the Minister of Agriculture and Director of Fogafin in Colombia during Iván Duque's government (2018-2022), I transitioned to become a consultant. My extensive professional experience of 34 years, both in the public and private sectors, has been a fundamental part of building a solid foundation for consultancy. This experience ranges from being an trade negotiator in agricultural matters, president of the poultry farmers' association, commercial manager of the coffee federation, manager of the ICA (national authority for animal and plant health), to serving as the Minister of Agriculture. Coupled with an economics degree, and practical experience in public policy i can bridge both the public and private sectors.

Practical experience is critical in agribusiness. The operations are multifaceted and a consultant can only provide value if is able to combine trusted methodologies with exposure to real operations in the industry

Having a wide skill set and knowledge base allows you to look at an issue more holistically across a business and come to a solution that is right for the business as a whole. It prevents a problem being treated in isolation and gives an overall perspective, factoring in wider effects and ramifications that might not be apparent to someone with a narrower knowledge base or a specialism taken in isolation.

To excel as an agriculture consultant, one must possess a comprehensive skill set. This includes a deep understanding of agricultural sciences and current innovations, coupled with the ability to effectively communicate with diverse audiences. Building strong relationships with clients and stakeholders, coupled with a keen insight into market trends, is crucial. Proficiency in managing resources, time, and budgets, along with exceptional interpersonal skills for navigating cultural variances, resolving conflicts, and fostering collaboration, is essential. Additionally, a solid grasp of business fundamentals, such as legal regulations and contract negotiation, is imperative for success in this field.

One thing that I've seen so important in been an agribusiness consultant is having hands-on experience, this helps a person to understand in-depth of what the whole process and techniques in the business is all about. As time goes by, the experience adds on and from there growth and development is achieved not just in technical expertise but also in the ability to manage team and/or teams to achieve the desired goal.

Familiarize yourself with local, state, and federal (Central government) regulations related to agriculture. Understanding the legal and regulatory landscape is essential for providing sound advice to clients.

Once you have the necessary education, experience, and network, consider starting your own consultancy or joining an existing consulting firm. Develop a business plan, set your rates, and market your services to potential clients.

Pursuing a career as an agriculture consultant offers variety and flexibility, allowing one to work on diverse projects with autonomy over schedule and location. However, the profession comes with challenges including competitive pressures, high client expectations, and potential liability for advice outcomes. Frequent travel to areas with limited infrastructure and the necessity to operate independently without direct team support are additional considerations. Despite these hurdles, the role remains rewarding for those committed to advancing the agricultural sector.

Opportunities: -Great exposure to a lot of farm businesses but also suppliers and processors. -Can be a very diverse role and no one day is the same. -Is very rewarding when you’re working with progressive and innovative farmers Challenges: -people not always willing to pay the right money for expertise and advice and expect things at a rate that isn’t achievable -the unknown of workload and therefore income can be a challenge

Challenges are the normality in this sector, if you want to become an agricultural consultant all that challenges will become your work. It can be rough and frustrating but at the end the deep connection with the environment and the satisfaction can overwhelm the bad moments!

Apart from academic qualification on an agriculture related displine, As a consultant you need to have hand-on wide experience touching in science and technology in core areas of agriculture. Networking and having an open mind approaches to issues is paramount important. A consultant is constant learners of all emerging issues and able to project future based on facts and expetiences.

To become an agriculture consultant, I believe that you need all of the above. Education and training lays the foundation from which to build on. Hands on experience helps with building the skills and competencies required to thrive in the field. While, good networks are crucial for exposing one to different opportunities that may exist.

In addition, I would like to classify agriculture consultants into two categories. 1. Technical consultant: Offer specialized guidance on environmental conservation, waste management, fisheries, poultry, and livestock as well as agronomy. 2. Business consultant: Provides guidance for farms and agricultural businesses, assists with financial management, and plans business strategies It is best to start with one of the aforementioned classifications and work your way into the other one.

Education is a key pillar in your expertise for understanding the core branches of science in agriculture. Experience is gained overtime but this depends on how you aligned your expertise in agriculture, is it a solution based approach, pragmatic or just written form, consultancy services in agriculture are driven by pragmatic results achieved and attested to by clients , because that's how network expands . I identified and defined my nitch in consultancy and had career orientation ( helps you work with time as a capital, be void of excuses ,stay ahead always ,build a network)as a discipline. The greatest is be enlightened, it's what differentiates career journey success as a consultant.
