In my experience as a recruiter, nothing is better than a prepared and enthusiastic candidate. If you want to impress recruiters at a career fair, come with informed questions that demonstrate a deep knowledge of the values, mission statement, and career goals of their organization. Demonstrate a commitment to furthering your skills and knowledge. This will leave a lasting impression.

While you certainly can use a shotgun approach and apply/stand in in line for every company available, career fairs are restrained by time and you'll miss out on other events, speaking panels, and networking sessions! Instead, you should come up with a list of companies that are a healthy mix of big companies / small companies that you're interested in. A solid research session of their product suite would help tons and with your elevator pitch to be more specific and relevant to the recruiter. Recruiters will often be told 100s of elevator pitches about student's profiles and what makes them unique - and it is a bit hard to keep track of it all. However, students who go the extra mile, will often stand out!

Group pitches are pretty unique, it's efficient in time, you all go through the recruiting process together, and more importantly, it's a pretty memorable approach. This also works best when you have substantial project or social impact work having completed or you've worked on a collaborative project together before - and this works especially well for smaller companies.

I have made some excellent connections throughout the years with recruiters and other professionals I have met at career fairs. Although many campus recruiters are busy attending events, they do appreciate talented and interested candidates. This leaves the door open for future professional relationships and future job openings you may be qualified for.

Following up is the most important part! At a college career fair a recruiter will see hundreds of students, so sending a quick email or message will help you to stand out and let them know you’re actually serious about an opportunity.

Make sure to send a follow-up note if you are interested in discussing things further. Depending on the venue, recruiters can walk away from career fairs with a large stack of resumes and it takes some time to get through them all. Job fairs are great for exposure, but don't bring enough eligible candidates to justify the costs related. What recruiters do enjoy, are going to the presentations and networking events. Virtual job fairs make more sense for professional positions.

Don't go to a career fair expecting you are going to find the exact job you are looking for. Instead, go to the career fair looking for the employers you want to work for.
