How can you coach colleagues to be more creative and innovative?

It is important to create an enabling environment and a culture that is open to ideas from everyone. The flow of ideas should not be top down but also down to the top. Encourage a culture that is open to failing fast and recovering. A culture that encourages curiosity, freedom to experiment/try within the parameters that the organization has established.

I create a safe atmosphere for engaging in an open communication. Give kind constructive feedback to encourage the colleague and suggest ways that can improve their creativity. There are certain things that can affect one's creativity and engaging in an open communication gives you an insight into these issues. Then the feedback and encouragements comes in as a form of inspiration to get back their "mojo".

Cultivating an environment where people feel free to express their ideas without being criticized/ put down is crucial. In the virtual work environment, I think it helps to have regular cameras-on meetings to discuss issues and brainstorm ideas. It also helps to call on the quieter people to get them to participate (and give them encouragement when they do). Disagreements should always be expressed respectfully, and it never hurts to throw in some extra emojis and exclamation points to keep the tone positive and supportive! 😃

The key to success in anything you do, whether in life or at work, is knowing what you want to achieve. It's like having a map to follow. When you start by deciding what you want to accomplish, it helps you set clear goals for every task or talk you have with someone. These goals show you the way forward and make it easier to plan what to do next. Additionally, to define the guidelines that support the goal you should: - Break down goals into steps and involve everyone. - Make sure everyone knows what to do and adjust as needed.

Balancing divergent and convergent thinking is key to unlocking creative potential. Encourage colleagues to brainstorm freely, generating a wide array of ideas without constraints. Foster an atmosphere where wild ideas are welcomed and explored. Then, guide the process toward convergence, helping to refine and prioritize ideas based on feasibility and impact.

I encouraged focus on specific tasks but held periodic brainstorming sessions to broaden everyone’s perspective. Everyone, including myself, benefited from the differing viewpoints.

To nurture creativity and innovation, it's essential to provide support and tools that facilitate the creation, evaluation, and realization of ideas. This involves ensuring your team members have access to relevant and credible information, data, and research. Equipping them with the necessary skills, knowledge, and techniques to enhance their creative work is also vital. When possible, avoid taking a need-to-know approach. Narrowing information flow can stifle creativity. Even the most junior staff may have valuable insights when provided with the bigger picture.

I use a tool called 4C - "We can all be geniuses" from Neurocodex school, which approaches the team using a Collective approach (Plenty of different people), Connective (finding the connections among ideas), Creative (No criticism over ideas, no restrictions, openness is the key), and Contextualized (aligned with the business and personal reality), and all these happen in a safe environment. .

When I’d assemble staff to brainstorm, everyone was treated as peers. All ideas were given equal weight during the discussions and even ideas not adopted were treated respectfully.

Work with different People for same or different types of projects. People that work together for a long time tend to start thinking alike. Teaming people with different backgrounds that dont work together all the time is a great way to enhance exchange, enrichful discussions in a culture of active listening and empathy.

A story that I always share on how we can come out a creative and innovative solution - how Henry Ford was inspired by butchers, and invented the assembly line for cars. This explains why we always need to read and learn, not only within the industry that we involved, but also other industries - although they look irrelevant. New problems need new solutions, which we need to get the inspiration outside of the box that we are in.
