Here's how you can motivate and inspire your employees as an executive.

When I managed a team of 16 account managers they were at rock bottom. All the past leaders just sat in meetings all day. No one knew how hard their job was or what they did. To lead by example, I took it upon myself to make sales calls and speak with clients. This instantly got me credibility. I also got to see real problems my team faced and that enabled me to solve them. The best leaders stay close to the customer.

As an executive you are a leading image of the company. Role model behaviors, communications, compliance, negotiations, conflict resolution, and healthy habits that would inspire and motivate employees to want to emulate such practices. We all seek someone to look up to, express something you learned from an employee in real time - reinforce their value and contributions. Reinforce good practices and quality work, offer insights how to improve if things are less than desired. Instill and reinforce trust in employees - let them know they were chosen to work in your teams. Be sure you are a living example of the product, service, or people you lead. Be the leader you would want to follow. Many are in command, few are trusted leaders-be one!

Great leadership is about helping your team succeed. Give team members tasks that challenge them and help them grow. Trust their abilities and support them when needed. This builds their skills and strengthens their trust in you. Celebrating both small and big successes boosts team morale. It shows that you notice and value their hard work, creating a positive and motivating workplace.

Shine your wings. Show your enthusiasm and passion towards things, be open to share your experiences. Be aligned & contributing to the culture. Be a good listener. Give space to everyone to feel themselves. Actions speak louder than words and perform what you preach.

For instance, during a major project, having regular update meetings can ensure that everyone knows their roles and deadlines. When I worked with my team, I always took regular updates and made sure to share important information and goals with everyone, which kept us all informed and aligned.

Whenever you become a manager, your responsibility as an employee is to create a comfortable environment for your colleagues so that they can communicate with you about their doubts and problems. Having an understanding manager builds trust and transparency among the team which eventually results in better results in a comfortable way. So try to be a motivator for your team members and they will respond accordingly!!

To truly motivate and inspire your team, focus on tailored recognition. Highlight specific actions or accomplishments that showcase an employee's unique contributions. For instance, instead of a generic "good job," you could say, "Your innovative approach to solving X problem was key to our success." When one of your employees delivers an outstanding project or product, shine the spotlight on her/him in meetings with your peers, bosses, and high-level customers. Instead of shining the spotlight on you (presenting the project or product solely yourself), let your employee make the presentation. I was very fortunate to work for and several leaders who had me present several projects and products to corporate executives, members of US Congress, members of UK Parliament, and other key stakeholders. These opportunities kept me pushing forward.

As an executive, I know the importance of recognizing and appreciating the efforts of my employees to motivate and inspire them. When people 1) know where the organisation is going, 2) why this is important for the company (and for them), and 3) how they can contribute, they will strive to achieve the mission. Then, 'all you need to do', as a leader, is enable your teams. a) Create an environment that sets the staff up for success. b) Ensure people have the mandate and the resources they need c) Train employees if they lack knowledge or skills. d) Stimulate positive behaviours. I look at it this way, you pay your employees already, it's a waste if you do not engage them fully.

By giving them the freedom to make decisions and take ownership of their work, I foster a sense of trust and responsibility. I provide the necessary resources and support while encouraging innovation and creativity. Allowing employees to manage their tasks and projects instills confidence and promotes professional growth. This approach not only enhances job satisfaction but also drives higher performance and productivity. Empowering autonomy creates a dynamic and engaging work environment where employees feel valued and motivated to contribute their best efforts.

Allow your subordinates to scale up. This should be a part of a leader's KPI. Only then will leaders learn to allow the team to try, fail or succeed. It may not always be failure, it may not start great but they will get there. As a leader be there when they need you the most, set the stage and step aside.

Be more than a manager, be a mentor. You will be revered or at least remembered for life. I still remember one of my first managers who invested in coaching. We were so spoilt by his leadership that switching teams led to heart breaks. He remains a mentor for life.

When employees feel they are siloed they often create competition between the silos. When silos are removed, and everyone understand their role in the success of the business, they work together to drive it's success. I worked at an organization that was historically siloed, and while half the employees were sitting on their phones doing personal stuff, the other half were swamped. The thinking was "it's not my job" so those with time never offered assistance. When both teams were reminded they are both working for the success of their share clients, they started working together making the overall client experience positive.

Remember, every employee is unique and what motivates one might not motivate another. Take the time to understand the individual needs and aspirations of your employees. Also, lead with empathy and compassion. Show your employees that you care about them as individuals, not just as workers. This can greatly enhance their motivation and commitment to the organization.
