First, let's avoid the pre-conceived notion that there is no bias within all of us. Acknowledge them to be aware of them. This requires reflection & introspection through self experiences, self assessment tools, workshops etc. Once you know them, you can minimise them hence maximising scope of inclusive decision making for a heterogenous group.

Before working upon doing away with biases its essential to know them. Visisible boases you know very well and once you decide to be a bias free faculty you'll be able to remove them voluntarily but there are invisible biases which you need to put efforts to first identify. Prepare a list of offerings to the students from your side. Analyse at least 10 such ocaions and find who did you prefer for particular event and why?

First you need to recognize and evaluate your own bias. The best way to achieve this is to "unpack your backpack" of privilege and reflect on your own experiences, both negative and positive. As educators, it is even more important that we question the bias we carry with us because it deeply impacts how we interact with our students, colleagues, and leadership. The biggest negative impact of bias that I have recently seen in education is the unfounded idea that many teachers have that something is "too hard" for their students. I promise it is not! We routinely underestimate our students and we are robbing them of powerful opportunities to learn and grow.

One way to tackle unconscious bias is to create a space that is safe so that we can acknowledge that we all have areas to work on in this journey. Creating that space will open the opportunity for more voices to be at the table and to create a true community where everyone's lived experience is honored and valued. As a former EL teacher, I worked with diverse families every day, and I genuinely wanted to know their stories and remember that we shared the same purpose - their child's success. Removing barriers such as language access and generalizations also went so far in helping to create authentic relationships.

It seems to me that tackling unconscious bias in decision-making involves implementing structured, objective criteria for evaluating students and regularly reviewing your own decision-making processes. Providing training for staff on recognizing and addressing bias can also help. Encouraging diverse perspectives and seeking input from a range of stakeholders ensures more balanced and equitable decisions.

The first step could be acknowledging the fact that we all have unconscious biases one way or another. As teachers, our biases might be reflected in our language or attitudes toward our students. Without even noticing, we might expect some of our students to perform better than others, female students to be better at language classes, etc. Once we accept this situation, we can educate ourselves more on this issue by identifying the types of biases and checking if we have been doing any of them. A reflective journal could be used. We can also ask another teacher to observe us while teaching and provide feedback on perceived biases.

Continuous Training Programmes in the form of Faculty Development Programmes, Capacity Building Programmes, L&D Sessions, Expert Sessions, Guest Talks, and Workshops themed around heterogeneity & inclusivity are a must to get rid of biases & complexities of decision-making.

Provide a conduit for open feedback once a solution is found to a heterogeneity or bias-based issue. Listen actively without prejudice. Give value to each voice. Be empathetic. When this is done, both staff & students can openly express their concerns which in turn can lead to inclusive decision-making in the future.
