In my opinion, there are at least two key ingredients needed to be considered a thought leader: 1) you must have a significant degree of knowledge and expertise with the subject matter and 2) you must genuinely believe in and be passionate about the subject matter. There have been quite a number of studies on teacher effectiveness, revealing that the more enthusiastic the teacher is about the subject, the more the students like the teacher.

Being authentic means being yourself. If your audience appreciates what you see and how you say it while being yourself, you'll connect with them. But not everyone will respond to this, just like how not everyone responds to a certain flavor of ice cream. So get used to it.
