In this case, the PE firm may decide to hold the investment. - if the industry is in the early growth stage, when growth is higher, competition is low, profitability is high, there may be several exit options. In this case, the PE firm may exit to a strategic buyer, or via a secondary buyout or an IPO - whatever has the best chance of maximizing value. - in a shakeout, with slowing growth, high competition, low profitability, the PE firm may exit via a distressed sale - in the mature stage, the PE firm may look to exit via an IPO - in the decline stage, the PE firm may exit through liquidation

- A strong value chain creates value across all primary as well as support activities including logistics, operations, marketing and sales, service, procurement, HR, R&D. A portfolio company with a strong value chain may have a high potential for an exit via an IPO or a strategic acquisition. - A weak value chain creates value only in some of the primary or support activities. In this case, the PE firm may consider other exit options like a secondary buyout, dividend recap or liquidation. Essentially, risk transfer from one hand to the other by changing the capital structure.
