However, this also requires you to persuade backers with a solid game idea. Another "easier" way of seeking for financial help it through family and friends, compared to random people, those close to you are more likely going to help you out.

I don't think following trends and exploring new technologies is the best way to stay fresh in game design, espiecially in the indie market. It's never too early to start your marketing and PR campaign... Sadly its easily said than done! We tend to delay the hard task of building your community till its too late. We are often afraid to show the game in too early of a stage but we should not do that. Trust me, I did that mistake once and paid dearly. But even if you are open toward community you should have a dedicated effort to build and engage with it... In a small team it often should be you (if you are the designer) but if you can't do it (you are too shy) ask someone else who is as excited for the game as you are to do it! It can be a game changer and I will never neglect it again, no matter the cost for me!

Build and share small prototypes to gain a social media following so that you can study them, and play games that compete with your product. Don't run off making a huge game you're paying a team for before you know what you're doing, you'll go bankrupt fast. I've seen several foolish indie dev studios do this. They make this huge game but only have around 35 followers... Disaster! You have to look for what's not being done in the market, attack the opportunities, and think about what your product offers that the others don't offer. Stop making generic scrolling shooters and platformers, there are millions of those already.

Listening to player feedback is important, but remember that you are the owner of the game. Players may have good UX ideas but often don't see the whole picture and might suggest significant changes, such as altering the game's genre. Don't forget the overall essence of your game.

Currently, going with a small team, and not a great funding on mobile is a huge risk. Yet, if your game is suitable primary for mobile - try it! Doing multiplayer game as a service if you don't have the funds and the experience is dangerous too - for your first game, you better go to single player! Be innovative but also focus on the presentation - players first need to acknowledge your game before they can see your great ideas. Dedicate time for communicating with your audience (a lot). Start building your game (if possible) even if you have no funds! Do not quit!

It doesn't have to be complicated to be fun. Make sure the features of the game serve the experience, and don't distract from it.
