SmartThings Works With 500K Smart Locks; Now Samsung’s Adding More Matter Support

This means your choices for smart locks controlled by Samsungs app are about to expand

Samsung SmartThings has expanded the brands of smart door locks it supports, giving you more choices for securing your smart home.

If you’re a Samsung fan, you may be familiar with its SmartThings technology. It already provides connectivity solutions for Samsung’s devices, and now it's expanding even more.

According to a press release sent to Lifewire, Samsung already supports more than 500,000 smart locks connected to SmartThings. Now, to expand its smart door lock coverage, Samsung is leaning into its support for the Matter and Aliro standards. Samsung is certified for the Matter 1.2 and 1.4 versions and plans to achieve certification for the 1.4 standard when released. The company also plans to add support for the Aliro standard for Digital Home Keys in 2025.

SmartThings uses Bluetooth Low Energy technology and cloud integration. This means you can monitor and use your smart door lock anywhere there’s a network connection. Using the Aliro standard when it becomes available will allow you to use a smart device—your smartphone or smartwatch, for example—to access your location with a compatible lock. Think of it—no more fumbling for your house or office keys!

If you’re worried about security, there is no need. The Digital Home Key has a digital PIN and operates on an embedded secure element, keeping your data safe. If you’re not a fan of using PINs, you can unlock your door with fingerprint recognition or on your smart device. And if you’re a Samsung Galaxy owner with Ultra-Wide Band technology, your door will 'magically' open automatically when you approach it.

The integration of Samsung SmartThings to your door lock means you can program a routine to unlock your door, set the lights to a relaxing level, and set your home thermostat to a comfy temperature—all with a single action. It sure seems like the smart home of the future is happening now, doesn't it?
