Collections and Research

Special Collections and University Archives

Located in the Maryland Room on the first floor, the Special Collections and University Archives collect and provide access to material related to the history of the University of Maryland, the state of Maryland, literature and rare books, and American history, especially as it relates to labor, mass media, and the performing arts. We also provide access to a premiere collection of post-war material produced in Japan.

Maryland Room in Hornbake Library

Maryland Room

The reading room for Special Collections and University Archives is located on the first floor of Hornbake Library, behind the exhibition gallery. Visit us to gain access to unique and rare material to support your research project. 

Exhibition Gallery

Located on the first floor, next to the Maryland Room, the gallery features annual exhibitions of our unique materials.

Instruction Room

Located in 3210 is the Special Collections and University Archives instruction room. Libraries' staff provide various types of instructional experiences for students, faculty, staff, alumni and other community members. 

Katherine Anne Porter Room

Katherine Anne Porter room

Located on the first floor, the Katherine Anne Porter Room is a replica of her personal library, set up with her furniture, and personal artifacts during her time in Washington, DC. Katherine Anne Porter (1890-1980) was an important American author, known mostly for her short stories and novel, Ship of Fools.

Study

There are a variety of study spaces available throughout Hornbake Library. Quiet, individual study spaces are available on the first and second floors. Group study spaces are available on the first and third levels.

Scanners, Printers, Computers

There are copier/printers, computers, and book and large format overhead scanners available in the Maryland Room. 

Printers are available on the first floor in lobby of Hornbake Library North. These printers can be accessed when the Maryland Room is closed.
