NHRA legend John Force has shown improvement from brain injuries suffered in a fiery crash last weekend, much to the relief of family members, according to an update Sunday from his race team.

"He became more consistent responding to commands and finally opened his eyes on day five," the statement read. "Following days of failed attempts, his wife and daughters were overcome with emotion when he murmured his name, 'John Force,' and later when prompted, gave a thumbs up."

Last weekend at an NHRA race in Virginia, while racing at 300 mph, Force's Funny Car burst into flames, crossed the track and crashed. Force, 75, suffered a traumatic brain injury.

The team statement said Force becomes agitated and confused, prompting him to try to get out of bed.

"His doctors have humorously described him as a raging bull," and he has been restrained, the statement said. However, he has recognized family members and called them by name.

Force's daughter, Courtney, is a retired NHRA driver and is married to IndyCar's Graham Rahal. They have two children. Force's daughters Brittany and Ashley are also NHRA veterans.

Force has 157 NHRA event wins and 16 season championships.
