The "Elvis" filmmaker reunites with Warner Bros. for the upcoming project.
The 2008 film is adapted into a six-part limited series for Hulu.
"I was inspired to re-approach my film 'Australia' to create 'Faraway Downs' because of the way episodic storytelling has been reinvigorated by the streaming world," Luhrmann said of recutting the 2008 epic.
"I spent weeks terrified," the "Elvis" director said.
"As I've gotten older, I'm thinking, 'What would I do with science fiction?'" Luhrmann said.

"I was bummed out," Hudson recalled of losing out on the role following a "hardcore" audition process.

Rita Wilson also remembered the late singer-songwriter and only child of Elvis Presley.
The singer-songwriter and philanthropist is survived by her family, including mother Priscilla Presley and daughter Riley Keough.
Behind-the-scenes special "Just A Boy From Tupelo: Bringing Elvis to the Big Screen" also debuts on HBO Max January 8.
Even now, the actor still says "I" when talking about Elvis Presley.
