Myra Breckinridge (1970)
A Fabulous Cult Classic
There will never be another movie quite like this one. It is unique in so many ways. As Raquel Welch states at the start of the audio commentary on the bluray release; 'It seemed like a good idea at the time.' It is quite simply camp fun of the highest order. It's not intended to be taken seriously. So, my advice is just relax and succumb to this weird, absurd and at times grotesque display of cinema. It must be seen to be believed. Mae West is an absolute delight and she provides most of the comedy relief. Whether or not this was intended or not is a mystery. It's so bad that it's great. It's the type of movie that could never be made today. Given the times that we live in, no studio or producer would invest money in a movie that essentially insults and Is degrading on many fronts. It is one mighty trip. I have also read Gore Vidal's book which it is based on. I must say, it is a miracle that a movie was able to be made at all as the book was deemed unfilmable. Once you read it I'm sure you will agree.
The Father (2020)
Great Screen Adaptation Of A Great Play
Directed by Florian Zeller and based on his own play (with Christopher Hampton), The Father is, quite simply, a brilliant movie that deals with one man's descent into the world of dementia. Anthony Hopkins gives what is quite simply his greatest screen performance of his long career, and Olivia Coleman provides excellent support as his caring daughter. This is one movie that will stay with you long after the credits roll. The Father contains some of the best film editing seen on screen in a very long time. It's heartbreaking yet empathetic. A very strong contender for this year's best actor and best supporting actress awards. You must see this movie. Anthony Hopkins delivers a masterclass in acting.
Pieces of a Woman (2020)
Pieces Of A Woman Unfortunately Doesn't Make A Whole
Firstly, let me start with the positive elements. Vanessa Kirby truly proves that she is a strong contender as a great actress. Her portrayal of Martha, who has recently lost a new born child, is nothing short of brilliant. It's always a delight seeing Ellen Burstyn. She's always been a strong, dependable actress with a unique screen presence and she succeeds in this supporting role. She has quite possibly the best scene halfway through the movie and she is the type of actress who demands your attention. Now for the negative elements. The acting is so good that one can't help but think that it's wasted due to very sluggish direction and a generally mediocre script. The first 30 minutes are truly compelling. After that, the wheels fall off and the film almost feels like it is being crushed by such strong performances. The film feels a lot longer than what it actually is. With such great talent in front, as well as behind the camera, this film should have been much better. Worth a look purely for the outstanding acting from Kirby and Burstyn.
Meet Me in St. Louis (1944)
One Of MGM's Absolute Best
Meet Me In St Louis is pure joy from start to finish. Vincente Minnelli's stylised direction has never suited this form better than it does here. This was Judy Garland's first movie with soon to be husband Minnelli. Judy has never looked more beautiful on film. The movie also boasts a great supporting cast, most notably Mary Astor and Marjorie Main. The film will always be remembered for introducing the now standard Christmas song 'Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas' but the film has so much more to offer. Treat yourself to two hours of absolute joy and entertainment.
Hillbilly Elegy (2020)
Much better than the critics would lead us to believe
Unfortunately most of the critics have not been kind to Hillbilly Elegy. I'll admit that it's not a great movie but it is very good. As a family drama this movie works. Both Amy Adams and Glenn Close are fabulous. My recommendation is to watch it and judge for yourself.
Hollywood (2020)
Wow. What an amazing 'What If'
A thoroughly entertaining reimagining of Hollywood in 1948. Fabulous production values and some terrific performances. Jim Parsons is a particular standout as the notorious Hollywood agent Henry Willson. Ryan Murphy has presented us with a very interesting take on what might have been. Some other reviewers have mentioned the word cringeworthy. Cringeworthy it is at times but it is thoroughly entertaining. The only negative thing about Murphy's latest offering it is that it wasn't true, although the 'Dreamland' premise is loosely based on Scotty Bowers' autobiography 'Full Service.' Ryan Murphy can be hit and miss at times (his last effort for Netflix, 'The Politician' was a bit of a mixed bag) but I'm happy to say that 'Hollywood' is a hit.
Judy (2019)
A Star Is Reborn
Renee Zellwegger delivers a remarkable performance as the legendary Judy Garland. A very sad story with a touching (bordering on cheesey) finale. Unfortunately the script isn't as strong as it should be, however, Renee's performance makes this biopic more than worthwhile viewing. A strong, early contender for the upcoming awards season.
A Star Is Born (2018)
A Star Is Born Indeed
A Star Is Born was probably the most eagerly anticipated movie of 2018. A lot of hype preceded it, mainly focusing on Lady Gaga's first major screen debut. That said, I must admit (and this is rare for a Hollywood movie) that the movie is deserving of all the hype and subsequent praise. Lady Gaga is simply phenomenal and it is a good, solid directorial debut for Bradley Cooper. This is the 5th time that this story has been told on film (if you count What Price Hollywood). It is just as good as the 1954 version starring Judy Garland and James Mason. Cooper has reimagined the story, but, and to his credit, he hasn't played around with the winning formula too much. The music is also very good and the onscreen chemistry between Cooper and Gaga comes across as believable and sincere. Cooper has succeeded in keeping this classic story alive.
