I had the opportunity to sit down and watch the 2018 horror movie "The Rope Curse" (aka "Zong xie") now in 2020. Needless to say that I hadn't even as much as heard about it prior to getting the chance. But the fact that this was an Asian horror movie, was more than what was needed to make me sit down to watch it.
Well, let's just say that writer Keng-Ming Chang and director Shih-Han Liao tried...
So what I mean by that? Well, this movie was mundane. So terribly mundane. It was just like they had bought a blueprint of how to make a horror movie and followed it step by step literally. Everything in the movie was so generic and predictable, and that was a terrible blow to the movie's overall enjoyment and entertainment value.
While the movie suffered from having an abysmal script and storyline, I will point out that they actually had a good enough cast ensemble for the movie, and actresses Hsin-Yen Hsu and Kimi Hsia really carried the movie quite well with their performances. Just a shame that the script was so mundane.
For an Asian horror movie then "The Rope Curse" was just, well no sense in beating around the bush, boring, for lack of better words. There was nothing scary in the movie, especially so since everything was so scripted and predictable.
"The Rope Curse" was watchable, for sure. But this was by no means an outstanding movie. And there are far better and more enjoyable Asian horror movies readily available.
My rating for this 2018 horror movie is a flat and mediocre five out of ten stars.
