In almost every version of The Terminator franchise, a lone hero is sent to help a person at the time they need it most. Just like one of those heroes, Terminator Zero came into Mattson Tomlin’s life at the very moment he needed it.
Tomlin had just spent a few whirlwind years ascending the Hollywood screenwriting ladder to become one of the busiest scribes in town. Netflix turned his spec Project Power into a big budget movie starring Oscar winner Jamie Foxx. IFC released his sci-fi romance Little Fish to strong reviews. It seemed like almost every studio in Hollywood was hiring him for one project or another. And most notably, Matt Reeves tapped him to work on the script for The Batman, while also backing Tomlin’s very personal directorial debut, Mother/Android.
It was a meteoric rise, and it was all happening before Tomlin was 30.

James Cameron's "The Terminator" is an undeniable action-horror classic, but seven years later — armed with groundbreaking digital technology and a budget that would make it the most expensive film at the time in history — he completely changed action films forever with "Terminator 2: Judgment Day." In the decades that have followed, countless creatives have desperately been trying to capture a morsel of the feast served up by Cameron, to varying degrees of success. Each "Terminator" sequel since, as well as the short-lived (and underrated) TV spin-off "The Sarah Connor Chronicles" exist in the shadow of Cameron's masterpiece, stalked by the looming threat of his genius not unlike a T-1000 tracking John Connor.

If the name Mattson Tomlin rings a bell, it should. After writing “Project Power” for Netflix starring Jamie Foxx and Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Tomlin’s career really took off. He was brought in to help Matt Reeves write on his first “Batman” film with Robert Pattinson, and while he eventually didn’t receive a credit when rewrites evolved, he is writing “The Batman – Part II” with Reeves.

"Terminator Zero" was one of several animated shows that blew us away at Netflix's June 2024 animation presentation. Now, fans can have their first proper look at the anime series by way of a brand new trailer that reveals more than ever before about this Japan-set installment in the "Terminator" franchise.
The series focuses on Eiko, a resistance fighter from 2022 who's sent back to 1997 to protect scientist Malcolm Lee from a Terminator played by none other than Timothy Olyphant. Yes, the "Justified" star will be voicing the main Terminator in "Zero," but it seems this won't be anything like Arnold Schwarzenegger's hulking T-800. Instead, as showrunner/executive producer/writer Mattson Tomlin ("Project Power") told Empire Magazine, this cyborg will be more of a "Creepy Fish Man," which apparently means he's "not handsome," "a little cross-eyed," and "very spooky." All of which should excite fans of the franchise who might...

The Terminator might be an unstoppable killing machine, but the same can't be said for the franchise as a whole. After two of the best sci-fi action movies ever made in 1984's "The Terminator" and 1991's "Terminator 2: Judgment Day," the saga created by James Cameron began to struggle — and that's putting it lightly.
Since "T2" there have been four movies in the franchise, and frankly, none of them are very good. Now, as is common in the internet age, you can find defenders for every one of the abysmal films that followed "T2." Even the abject "Terminator: Genisys" has its defenders, and you'll find no shortage of praise for Gabriel Luna's Terminator in 2019's "Terminator: Dark Fate." But the trajectory of this once-great saga has undeniably been one of diminishing returns and anticlimactic attempts to revitalize the magic that once made it what it was.
Now, though, things might be looking up.

Mattson Tomlin, showrunner and writer of the Terminator Zero anime series at Netflix, was not very comfortable writing some parts of season 1 consisting of eight episodes. Amid a few hurdles, the writer had to overcome the biggest problem, and that was eliminating guns from the show. Can you imagine Terminator without guns?
Terminator Zero
The live-action Terminator saga has been action-packed with continuous gun blazing and several explosions. But Netflix, Skydance, and animation studio Production I.G. were all in favor of Terminator Zero to have a Japanese angle. However, Japanese culture is very different from the United States. Japanese gun law has limited the accessibility of guns over the decades, and even the police would first engage in hand-to-hand combat before using guns.

Warner Bros. Japan and Wit Studio are all set to release a new anime series called Suicide Squad Isekai, an anime series based on DC Comics’ Suicide Squad. The show has got the superhero fans all hyped up because the character trailer of the series featuring Harley Quinn makes it look utterly promising.

Jamie Foxx is known for his work as an actor, starring in massive projects like Django Unchained, Ray, The Burial, and They Cloned Tyrone. In the early years of his career, however, things were certainly less gilded for him. In 2007, the actor started his own talk-radio program called The Foxxhole, piggybacking off the fame he had gained through projects like Collateral and Ali, as well as the recognition he got for winning an Oscar for Ray.

‘Game of Thrones’ Aegon’s Conquest Spinoff in the Works From ‘The Batman Part II’ Writer (Exclusive)
HBO is developing another Game of Thrones spinoff series.
The company is actively heating up its long-in-discussion Aegon’s Conquest idea.
HBO is partnering with Mattson Tomlin, an in-demand scribe who did uncredited work on Matt Reeve’s The Batman and is co-writing its upcoming sequel, The Batman Part II. He also wrote the Keanu Reeves action comic adaptation Brzrkr and an animated Terminator series which he is also showrunning for Netflix.
Aegon’s Conquest is basically a direct prequel to the hit House of the Dragon, telling the story of the Targaryen’s bloody and brutal conquest of Westeros. The story follows the invader Aegon Targaryen, who conquered the continent of Westeros with his sister wives, Rhaenys and Visenya, and their dragons. Aegon successfully unified six of the Seven Kingdoms in just two years, with only Dorne able to successfully resist.

If Netflix were a theatrical studio, we’d say that they were releasing the trailer for “They Cloned Tyrone” to be attached to opening weekend prints of “Extraction 2,” which has been in very limited theatrical release since last weekend and debuts on streaming this Friday. Offering the latest look at the next “big” Netflix original concurrently with the launch of the most recent biggie is pretty par for the course.
“They Cloned Tyrone” is the directorial debut of Juel Taylor, who previously wrote or co-wrote films like “Creed II,” “Space Jam: A New Legacy” and the recently-released (on Peacock) LeBron James biopic “Shooting Stars.” This Black List script, penned by Taylor and Tony Rettenmaier (who also shares credit with Taylor on the two LeBron James-specific titles) looks to have become a peppy caper-ish genre throwback. A week after suffering a “medical complication,” actor Jamie Foxx is still hospitalised in Georgia.
Last week, the 55-year-old actor’s daughter Corinne shared on Instagram that her father had experienced a health scare. She added that due to “quick action and great care”, Foxx is “on his way to recovery”.
On Monday (17 April), a source told CNN that the Django Unchained star is still hospitalised.
Details of Foxx’s medical emergency haven’t been revealed.
In 2021, Foxx admitted his biggest parenting mistake was not making enough time for his daughter.
During an appearance on The Ellen Show web series Dad Confessions, Foxx said he compensated for not being home enough by simply taking his daughter Corrine to Disneyland.

Netflix is betting big on Jamie Foxx these days, and why wouldn’t they? His two action movies for the service, Project Power and Day Shift, both did pretty well, and the guy is a tireless self-promoter, even serving as the host for this year’s Tudum event. As such, Netflix teased his upcoming movie, They Cloned Tyrone, which seems to be a pulpy sci-fi mash-up, and co-stars John Boyega and Teyonah Parris. Check out the trailer above!
The movie, which is due out on December 30th, is the feature debut of director Juel Taylor. Famous as the writer for Creed 2 (and – well – Space Jam: A New Legacy), the film looks like a fun caper, with the trailer scored by one of the coolest funk songs ever – The Gap Band’s “You Dropped a Bomb on Me”.

“Beverly Hills Cop 4” is ramping up and has added Taylour Paige and Joseph Gordon-Levitt to its cast to star alongside Eddie Murphy, Netflix announced Monday.
The “Beverly Hills Cop” sequel also has an official title from Netflix, “Beverly Hills Cop: Axel Foley.”

The logline for “Beverly Hills Cop: Axel Foley” is being kept under wraps, but the film is a follow-up to the trilogy of cop comedies in which Murphy plays Foley, a Detroit cop who is suspended from the force and travels to LA, only to find himself investigating the murder of a friend.

Exclusive: The long-awaited sequel to the classic comedy franchise is a go as sources tell Deadline that Taylour Paige and Joseph Gordon-Levitt have joined series star Eddie Murphy in Netflix’s newly titled Beverly Hills Cop: Axel Foley. Production on the sequel is under way with Mark Molloy directing. Murphy is back as Axel Foley and will produce along with Jerry Bruckheimer and Chad Oman of Jerry Bruckheimer films. Will Beall penned the script.
The franchise moved from Paramount to Netflix in the winter of 2019 and follows the adventures of Detroit cop Foley, who first appeared in the 1984 smash hit that followed him to Beverly Hills to solve the murder of a friend. The film became one of the year’s biggest hits and solidified Murphy’s movie-star status. It was followed by two sequels in 1987 and 1994.
Charisse Hewitt-Webster and Ray Angelic will exec produce. Melissa Reid of Jerry Bruckheimer Films will co-produce.

Screenwriter Mattson Tomlin is once again heeding the call of the Bat-Signal.
Tomlin is reteaming with Matt Reeves to write The Batman 2, the follow-up to Reeves’ well-received Robert Pattinson-starring take on the Caped Crusader that proved to be a hit with audiences.
Plot details are being kept in the Batcave. It is not even clear whether the sequel will feature the Joker, Batman’s classic nemesis teased in the closing moments of Reeves’ movie and portrayed by Barry Keoghan. The news comes as Reeves signs a first-look deal with Warner Bros. Discovery.
Tomlin worked on The Batman, coming in during the development when third-act issues arose, although he did not receive screenwriting credit — which Reeves shared with Peter Craig. This time around, Tomlin is coming in on the ground floor.

Chad Stahelski is paying it forward.
When he’s not conducting well-choreographed chaos for Keanu Reeves’ John Wick, Stahelski strives to lift up the stunt community that launched his career as a stunt performer, as well as his second act as a director. With the success of the John Wick franchise, Stahelski and his company, 87eleven Entertainment, now have the cachet to create opportunities for other stunt professionals with filmmaking aspirations, just like Reeves did for him and his former partner, David Leitch.
So when Stahelski’s friend and John Wick: Chapter 2 supervising stunt coordinator J.J. Perry approached him and 87eleven Entertainment President Jason Spitz with a script called Day Shift, they both jumped on it and had it polished so they could pitch the vampire action-comedy to Netflix. “Day Shift” treats its mix of action, comedy, and horror as an excuse to repeat those genres with lots of stuff you’ve seen and heard before. But the fun of this vampire movie is more about its charisma: it’s about Jamie Foxx gliding through a major action role (more than his part in Netflix’s previous “Project Power”), and a mighty cool Snoop Dogg wearing a big cowboy hat, later on hauling a vampire-killing machine gun named “Big Bertha.” And not for nothing, “Day Shift” is also the rare modern action movie that makes a meal out of its fight scenes.

After more than a quarter-century as a movie star, Owen Wilson is finally suiting up to play a superhero in Secret Headquarters, the new Paramount Plus family flick directed by Henry Joost and Ariel Schulman. If those names sound familiar to you, it’s because they were behind such diverse and eccentric flicks as Paranormal Activity 3 & 4 (3 is by far the best movie in the franchise), the better-than-expected teen thriller Nerve, and the recent Netflix hit Project Power.
In this, Wilson plays a mild-mannered family man named Jake Kincaid who has a secret life. No, he’s not a killer or a bigamist – it’s all much more innocent than that. It turns out, he’s a legit superhero with a headquarters built under the family home. When villains attack and dad’s not home, his son and best pals must team up to defend the family fortress until...

In The Adam Project, a disposable Netflix feature probably watched by a squillion people earlier this year despite a plot so contorted it was basically a sleep aid, young actor Walker Scobell played a kid bruised by the inattention of a workaholic dad who then died, compounding the hurt. The boy’s perception shifted after a time-space wormhole brought him face to face with his grownup self, also shedding light on his father’s integrity. Scobell again plays a disgruntled son given a sci-fi shakeup in another empty-calorie adventure, Secret Headquarters, though it’s perhaps a small mercy this time that instead of Ryan Reynolds cracking wise we get the mellower Owen Wilson alternative.
Developed from a story by co-screenwriter and frequent Marvel hired hand Christopher Yost, the film was originally slated as a Paramount theatrical release before being bumped to Paramount+ on the same date.

Dominique Fishback is so dope. I’ve loved the actress ever since Jordana Sparro’s 2018 film Night Comes On, and others took notice as the actress was named a Sundance Film Festival breakout star, and praised for her performance in the movie.
However, starring in director Shaka King’s Oscar-nominated film Judas and the Black Messiah alongside Daniel Kaluuya and Lakeith Stanfield is what solidified Fishback’s place in Hollywood. She has been a part of some great projects including HBO series The Deuce and Netflix’s Project Power with Jamie Foxx, and currently in the Apple TV+ miniseries The Last Days of Ptolemy Grey with Samuel L Jackson.
The latter is based on the novel by Walter Mosley. Ptolemy Grey is an ailing man forgotten by his family, by his friends, and by even himself. Suddenly left without his trusted caretaker and on the brink of sinking even deeper into a lonely dementia,...

Henry Joost and Ariel Schulman have signed on to direct the film with screenwriter Josh Feldman currently writing the screenplay. That film is based on the life of Coach Keith Adams, and his sons, Kaden and Trevin, quarterback and team co-captain.
“This film will be groundbreaking for many reasons including representation and disability visibility both behind and in front of the camera. As someone who graduated from a state school for the Deaf, I am honored to introduce the world to a compelling family, both on and off the field, with Coach Keith Adams as its beating heart,” Feldman said.

Dominique Fishback holds her own opposite Samuel L. Jackson in Apple TV+’s “The Last Days of Ptolemy Grey,” and she says that was inspired by the strength of the character. “I wasn’t really nervous because Robyn is not nervous of Ptolemy,” she tells Variety’s Awards Circuit Podcast. “She’s not intimidated by him. So therefore, I’m not gonna do that because I’m representing this character.”
On this edition of the Variety Awards Circuit podcast, Fishback talks about “The Last Days of Ptolemy Grey,” and working with Jackson, as well as her take on the character, playing teenage roles even as she enters her 30s, her interest in astrology and how she’s enjoying her success. Later in this episode, “Mr. Mayor” star Bobby Moynihan on the joys of his ensemble comedy, which sadly was just canceled on Thursday as this episode made it to air.

Dominique Fishback has been cast in the lead role of Donald Glover and Janine Nabers’ upcoming Amazon series.
Plot details for the show are being kept under wraps, though it has previously been reported that it will focus on a “Beyonce-like figure,” presumably played by Fishback. Glover had previously spoken to Variety about the project during the “Atlanta” premiere red carpet, which can be seen below. Fishback will produce in addition to starring.

"Mother/Android," the new directorial outing from "Project Power" scribe Mattson Tomlin, takes an emotionally complex maternal approach to the robot apocalypse sub-genre. Produced by Matt Reeves and Bill Block, the film sees young lovers Georgia (Chloë Grace Moretz) and Sam (Algee Smith) attempt to make their way to safety through an android uprising before Georgia gives birth.
At its core, it's a story of a young refugee family wrapped in a science-fiction package, and it leans more on the emotional impact of the crisis than in a last-ditch effort to blow it sky high -- though there's some of that, too. I sat...

Ending a year begun saving her baby from a gremlin in deliberately outrageous “Shadow in the Cloud,” Chloë Grace Moretz again suffers peril-fraught maternity as half of the title equation in “Mother/Android.” This sci-fi thriller, launching on Hulu Dec. 17, offers a more sobersided survival tale set in an imminent future where humanity’s artificial helpmates have turned against their creators. It’s a familiar dystopian premise that plays out in narrative terms redolent of myriad recent movies like “A Quiet Place.”
Still, at least to a point, it’s lent sufficient engrossing urgency by Mattson Tomlin in his commercial-feature directorial debut. He wrote two other fantasy-tinged tales released last year, “Little Fish” and “Project Power.” This project is ostensibly more personal, inspired by the Romanian biological parents who apparently gave him up as an infant amidst the turmoil of that nation’s 1989 revolution. But “Mother/Android” falls short when it...

The fight for human survival at the end of the world clashes against an uprising of artificial intelligence in the upcoming Hulu original film, “Mother/Android.” The science-fiction thriller is written and directed by Mattson Tomlin, making his directorial debut after writing other near-future dystopian tales including the romance “Little Fish” and the Netflix action hit “Project Power.” The film stars Chloë Grace Moretz (last seen as a World War II pilot in “Shadow in the Cloud”) and Algee Smith (of “Euphoria” and “The Hate U Give”). Hulu has released a first look for their sci-fi movie “Mother/Android,” starring Chloë Grace Moretz and Algee Smith. The new film, which debuts Friday, Dec. 17, marks the feature directorial debut of “Project Power” and “The Batman” screenwriter Mattson Tomlin.
Set in the near future, Moretz stars in the film as Georgia, who is days away from the arrival of her first child with boyfriend Sam (Smith). “Mother/Android” follows the couple through their treacherous journey of escape as their country is caught in an unexpected war with artificial intelligence. They must face “No Man’s Land” – a stronghold of the android uprising — in hopes of reaching safety before Georgia gives birth. “Mother/Android” also stars Raúl Castillo playing a character named Arthur.

"Project Power" was released by Netflix at the tail end of last summer. The summer moviegoing season in 2020, for painfully obvious reasons, was sorely lacking in the typical superhero/comic book movie fare. The Mitchells vs. The Machines, featuring the voices of Danny McBride and Olivia Colman, has become Netflix’s biggest animated film to date.
The streamer said that the sci-fi comedy, which comes from Sony Pictures Animation, director Mike Rianda and Lord and Miller, was watched by 53M member households in its first 28 days.
This is more than the 43M that tuned in for Over The Moon and the 38M that watched The Willoughby’s in the same period.
Netflix Earnings Day: Deadline’s Complete Coverage
Elsewhere, on the film side, it estimates that Kevin Hart’s Fatherhood will be watched by 74M in its first 28 days – the comedy was released on June 18. The streamer inched up viewing figures for Zack Snyder’s Army of the Dead to 75M, up from the 72M that it had initially predicted.
This puts it tied with Project Power at number eight of its most watched films.

Zack Snyder’s zombie epic “Army of the Dead” is off to a strong start on Netflix, as the streamer reports (via Deadline) that the movie is expected to be viewed by 72 million households over its first four weeks of release. That number puts “Army of the Dead” in the number 10 spot on the list of biggest Netflix original openings. “Army of the Dead” opened to the same household views as George Clooney’s “The Midnight Sky,” which launched over the Christmas holiday last year. It’s important to note that Netflix recognizes a “view” as any subscriber who watched two minutes of the movie’s runtime.
The strong opening for “Army of the Dead” is good news for Snyder, who intends to launch a new franchise for the streamer with his Dave Bautista-starring action movie. Two “Army”-connected films are already in development at Netflix, one is an...

The story of ride-sharing company Uber, which revolutionized ground transportation, is coming to television.
Showtime has given a series order to Super Pumped, an anthology from Billions co-creators Brian Koppelman and David Levien. Joseph Gordon-Levitt (The Trial of the Chicago 7) is set to star in the first installment, which is based on Mike Isaac’s bestselling book Super Pumped: The Battle for Uber.
It tells the story of Uber, one of Silicon Valley’s most successful and most destructive unicorns. Pivoting on Travis Kalanick (Gordon-Levitt), Uber’s hard-charging CEO who ultimately was ousted in a boardroom coup, the series will depict the roller-coaster ride of the upstart transportation company, embodying the highs and lows of Silicon Valley. Even amid the radical upheaval generated within the global tech capital, Uber stands out as both a marvel and a cautionary tale, featuring internal and external battles that ripple with unpredictable consequences.
