If Richard Matheson wrote it, you know it's going to be good. Matheson, who wrote some of the best TWILIGHT ZONE episodes, was hired by Hitch to write something interesting. This episode combines many elements, topped with some moody music, which was a must for Hitchcock.
Screen favorite Hugh O'Brien plays Christopher, a gentleman leading a very nice married life -- until his past comes back to haunt him. If you're series buff, this story may remind you (in part) of a classic half hour series episode that starred Richard Conte. He had a very similar existence, until his old boss suddenly appeared and wanted him to resume work as a hitman.
O'Brien is not an assassin, but he has a questionable past (and apparently some enemies) that have caught up with him and his beautiful wife, Helen, well played by Gene Rowlands. Tall and imposing John Anderson makes a terrific heavy here, portraying Adam. Matheson did a superior job in defining these characters and putting in that famous Hitch twist ending, wondering just how this is all going to turn out.
I agree with the last reviewer, these hour long episodes were well produced by Norman Lloyd, who handled most of the series episodes. They were in a class by themselves, unfortunately overshadowed by the iconic half hour series.
The closing brush fire scene is a classic, excellently filmed, perhaps the best outdoor disaster scene of the entire series.
