Starring Deva Cassel, Laura Luchetti’s “The Beautiful Summer” (“La Bella Estate”) has bowed sales and a trailer, ahead of its world premiere at this week’s Locarno Festival.
In a first deal to go down for sales agent True Colours, Palace Films has swooped on distribution rights to Australia and New Zealand. Xenix Filmdistribution will release in Switzerland “The Beautiful Summer,” which is loosely based on Cesare Pavese’s novel.
“His vision is so contemporary. He speaks about adolescence, the time in your life when everything is possible. It’s a story of a simple girl trying to make it in the big city, forced into becoming a woman. It’s a story of every girl,” Luchetti told Variety.
In the film, set in Turin in 1938, hard-working Ginia (Yile Yara Vianello) is looking for an adventure. She finds Amelia (Deva Cassel), who models for painters and introduces her to a whole different world.

Seth Meyers, host of NBC’s “Late Night,” will be standing in solidarity with the writers on strike beginning Tuesday, but he and his team did offer one last show before the deadline hit Monday night.
During his last taping, the host joked that his home network doesn’t really even know what he does for them.
As part of his “A Closer Look” segment, Meyers roasted Fox News for reportedly creating a secret dossier full of damaging information on now-former host Tucker Carlson, apparently as part of an effort to keep him from disparaging the network after he got fired.
Of course, according to a recent report from Rolling Stone, the move is just “classic Fox” — but to Meyers, it’s actually “insane” that an employer would do that.

Joy Oladokun recently started re-watching Nashville, the soapy TV series centered on country music dreams and drama that helped usher in a wave of big change in the Tennessee capital. She had been thinking about her own place in Nashville — mainly, if she should stay as the state becomes increasingly hostile to marginalized people — and feeling depressed about the way the town’s music industry fosters Olympic levels of jealousy for anyone who catches a break.

The success of Ridley Scott's 2000 battle epic "Gladiator" might be seen as a little baffling. The film was nominated for 12 Academy Awards in the early months of 2001, and would win Best Picture, Best Actor, Best Costumes, Best Sound, and Best Visual Effects. This was in spite of the film receiving only vaguely positive reviews from most critics (it currently holds an 80% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes). Stephen Hunter, in his review in the Washington Post, called the film a disappointment, and the L.A. Weekly's Manhola Dargis called it "ultimately pointless." Roger Ebert gave the film a mere two stars. Overall, "Gladiator" is something of a slog, featuring a dishwater-dull color palette and a perfunctory story that offers little drama and no surprises. These days, "Gladiator" occasionally pops up on lists of the worst Best Picture winners.
"Gladiator" was, however, a massive hit, so it clearly tapped into a...

The Devil’s Advocate is a horror movie directed by Taylor Hackford starring Al Pacino, Keanu Reeves and Charlize Theron.
About the Movie The Devil’s Advocate
The Devil’s Advocate has Al Pacino at his best and if we want to see him in his Italian acting that is so personal, this is the movie to watch: he dances Flamenco style and whatever they throw at him and invoques the rage of God. Keanu Reeves is… passably good but don´t forget this actor has worked with Coppola and Scorsese so he must be pretty special… and Charlize Theron who is great in the role of the wife of lawyer Kevin Lomax.
Storyline (let´s hope this is not a Spoiler Alert): our star is a unscrupulos lawyer that doesn´t hesitate in defending supposed (more than guilty) pedophiles to pocket some good cash. With these high morals, there is only...

It’s last call for a number of great movies leaving HBO and HBO Max in March. Fortunately, the month is also packed with new movies and shows, but if you were planning to revisit any of the films below, now’s your chance.

"This is not a work of fiction." Discovery+ has debuted a trailer for a chilling, thrilling documentary called Miracle Fishing: Kidnapped Abroad, which will be streaming in a few weeks. Made by Miles Hargrove, the doc film follows the harrowing true story of his father's kidnapping by the Colombian Farc in 1994. Encouraged by his mother to film everything, Hargrove intimately captured the haunting and nerve-wracking moments as a small group of family and friends attempt to negotiate with the kidnappers and recover his father. Told entirely through firsthand archival footage from his old Video8 video diaries, Hargrove shares his family's story of strength and endurance amidst the unimaginable. What an intense pitch. This doc plays out in real time, "leaving you on the edge of your seat as each new demand of the kidnappers comes through." Whoa. Official trailer for Hargrove & ...

Creed frontman Scott Stapp reflects on tormented memories with his video for “Purpose for Pain,” the lead single from the vocalist’s upcoming third solo LP, The Space Between the Shadows.
The cathartic clip documents a young boy’s escape from an abusive home. After his father shouts at him and hurls a beer can toward his head, the character flees to a rickety desert structure and pines for a more peaceful life. “Even in my dreams, I can’t escape from myself,” Stapp roars on the track over a chugging post-grunge guitar riff.

Scott Stapp reflects on the trying past five years of his life and his road to redemption on the singer’s new song “Purpose for Pain.”
The track features on the Creed singer’s upcoming album The Space Between the Shadows, his first solo LP since 2013’s Proof of Life and the first new song since he experienced a much-publicized psychotic break at the end of 2014.
“‘Purpose for Pain’ is about seeking a higher meaning, a spiritual mentality when dealing with our struggles and life’s painful moments,” Stapp said in a statement.

America’s sweetheart? Actress Meg Ryan claims she never wanted that title.
Speaking in a one-on-one conversation with Gwyneth Paltrow at her In Goop Health conference in Culver City, California, Ryan claimed the spotlight generated by her Sleepless in Seattle performance was overwhelming and caused her to retreat from show business after a few more film roles.
“You know, I never wanted to be an actress,” Ryan said. “The whole idea of being a famous person, the whole thing, I felt like a witness to. I didn’t feel exactly in it. The actor was coming off a string of critical and commercial success with films like “Gladiator,” “Proof of Life,” and “A Beautiful Mind.” As actors are known to do, this was a time for Crowe to headline his own mega-franchise. He choose to play the role of Captain Jack Aubrey in the film “Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World.” Unfortunately, things didn’t work out.

Netflix has announced the list of films that will be available to stream in July. The list includes new never-before-seen original films, as well as documentaries, comedies, animated titles and some classic movies. Check out some of our favorite new offerings below, along with the complete list of all the new additions.

1. “To the Bone” (available July 14)
Marti Noxon’s feature directorial debut was a hit out of Sundance, where the Lily Collins-starring drama about eating disorders won over audiences for its nimble ability to tell a compelling dramatic story interspersed with well-earned humor. Sketched from Noxon’s own experiences with anorexia and bolstered by a star turn from the always-reliable Collins, the film is both important and entertaining, and it should be able to reach a very wide audience on the streaming platform. Do not miss it.
2. “Punch-Drunk Love” (available July 1)
Paul Thomas Anderson’s lauded 2002 romantic dramedy features Adam Sandler in one of his few “hey, this guy can really act!” roles and includes some of the auteur’s most indelible shots and richest observations about life and love. It’s a modern classic, and now it can be piped right into your home. I’m lookin’ at your Netflix queue and I just wanna smash it. I just wanna fuckin’ smash it with a sledgehammer and squeeze it. It’s so pretty.
3. “Chasing Coral” (available July 14)
Jeff Orlowski won the U.S. Documentary Audience Award at Sundance earlier this year for his newest feature, a stunning documentary about the fight to protect coral reefs from becoming extinct. Featuring breathtaking and distressing underwater footage, the movie puts into perspective just how endangered coral reefs are and tracks the effort to save them.
4. “Lion” (available July 9)
This heart-wrenching true story was an awards season juggernaut earlier this year, featuring stellar turns from Nicole Kidman and Dev Patel. Based on the unbelievable life of young Saroo Brierley, the feature follows his separation from his family and his startling trip back to them many years later, aided by — for real — Google Maps and his own indomitable heart. Bring tissues.
5. “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story” (available July 18)
The very first standalone “Star Wars” spinoff follows a motley crew of rogues, criminals, rebels, and scallawags as they attempt to steal the plans to the monstrous Death Star in a bid to really just totally stick it to the Empire and Darth Vader. Knowing how it ends — they get them! and…some other stuff, too! — doesn’t dilute its tension and creativity, and it features a banger of an ensemble cast. Let this one tide you over before the next entry in the rapidly expanding movie universe.
6. “E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial” (available July 1)
The early part of the month is heavy on kid-leaning classics, from “Free Willy” to “The Mighty Ducks,” but it’s hard to top the potency of Steven Spielberg’s 1982 classic. Gather the whole family around the TV and get heavy on the Reese’s Pieces, and enjoy one of the best films ever made about childhood, friendship, and letting go.

Close-Up is a column that spotlights films now playing on Mubi. Albert Brooks' Modern Romance (1981) is showing February 17 - March 19, 2017 in the United Kingdom in the series The Rom Com Variations. She’s out of my lifeShe’s out of my lifeAnd I don’t know whether to laugh or cry—Michael Jackson, “She’s Out of My Life”“cras amet qui numquam amavitquique amavit cras amet”—The Magus (John Fowles) Life comes at you fast. As someone recently on the receiving end of an unexpected breakup, I was a little cool on the idea of watching Albert Brooks’ 1981 film Modern Romance—whose premise was summarized, on the one-sheets at the time, in the following terms: “Robert was madly in love with Mary. Mary was madly in love with Robert. Under the circumstances they did the only thing they could do… they broke up.” But then, in that brutal darkness of heartache,...

Nate Parker’s Cinderella story took a decidedly darker turn Friday morning with a Deadline piece in which the filmmaker behind “The Birth of a Nation” gave an extended interview acknowledging his role in a 1999 rape charge, when he was a student at Penn State.
You can read the details here, but the upshot is he and “The Birth of a Nation” co-writer Jean McGianni Celestin had sex with a fellow student — an incident that, they said, was consensual; she says she was passed-out drunk and unable to give consent. The case went to trial, and Parker was acquitted while Celestin’s conviction was overturned on appeal.
This comes the morning after Parker received the Vanguard Award at the Sundance Institute’s Night Before Next benefit, where he also announced the Institute’s launch of The Birth of a Nation Fellowship for 18-to-24-year-old filmmakers who participate in the Institute’s Ignite program.

The Bourne Identity was the spy thriller that revitalized the genre. But the production was far from an easy one...
Like so many budding filmmakers of his generation, Doug Liman got his start in movies by fiddling with his father's Super 8 camera. Then aged eight, Liman "Picked it up, started making movies with it, and never stopped."
By the time he'd reached his early 30s, Liman's ambitions had finally paid off. His films Swingers and Go, released in 1996 and 1999, were made cheaply and recouped healthy profits. Urgent and effervescently told, they were the product of a young, talented filmmaker on the rise. Liman's rising profile soon saw him land the kind of deal that a few dozen other hopefuls would have sold their souls for - Universal signed him up to make a film based on Robert Ludlum's spy thriller, The Bourne Identity.

Scott Stapp is returning to music – and he couldn't be happier about it.
"I'm going to go on tour again," the Creed frontman tells People. "I'm just really excited and humbled by the opportunity to continue to do what I love. I miss the fans tremendously. I miss performing. I'm ready to get back to doing what I love."
On Wednesday, Stapp announced his Proof of Life World Tour. He has scheduled shows in South Africa, as well as in 16 American cities.
It's an achievement that seemed unattainable last year, when Stapp, 42, had a drug and alcohol fueled psychotic break.

"Devil's Advocate" and "Proof of Life" helmer Taylor Hackford has been set to direct Cinelou's "The Comedian," the long-gestating passion project of Robert De Niro.
De Niro will play a toxic insult comic along the lines of a Don Rickles. Art Linson penned the script but Jeffrey Ross, a frequent celebrity roast guest and the writer of De Niro comedy "What Just Happened?," has penned the material that De Niro's character will spout.
Mike Newell recently signed on to the project but soon had to exit due to scheduling. Linson will produce alongside Mark Canton and Courtney Solomon. Casting is now underway and filming is slated to begin in mid-January in New York.

Meg Ryan and her rocker boyfriend John Mellencamp have split up after more than three years of dating.
Meg Ryan, John Mellencamp Split
Ryan and Mellencamp reportedly broke up after the distance started to take a toll on their relationship. “It was the distance,” a source told People. “She lives in New York and he resides in Indiana. It was the long distance that ultimately was the cause.”
Mellencamp has previously stated that not even his affection for Ryan could lure him to live in Manhattan. The “Jack & Diane” singer has called himself “too sensitive” for the big city and has stated his concern for his girlfriend, who has long called it home.
"I'm too sensitive to live there," he told Rolling Stone in December. "I can't see poor people. I can't see the suffering. I can't see the trash on the streets." As for the paparazzi attention Ryan faces,...

Whether or not you loved post-grunge supergroup Creed and the ever-present hit "With Arms Wide Open," you need to listen to lead singer Scott Stapp talk about the song reaching the "burn-out phase." After battling addiction and writing a wrenching memoir, "Sinner's Creed," the singer is digging into his dark materials for his new album, "Proof of Life" (available Nov. 5). Melinda and I had a great time talking to Stapp, who talked about the catharsis of writing a memoir, thoughts of...

In the late '80s and throughout the '90s, not a year went by without a movie starring Meg Ryan. The bubbly blonde actress became "America's Sweetheart" thanks to films including "When Harry Met Sally," "Sleepless in Seattle," and "You've Got Mail."
But in the last decade, Ryan has all but disappeared from the screen, doing only small, supporting roles here and there. Why did one of the most sought-after actresses in Hollywood disappear?
According to the latest issue of People, it's not because Ryan wasn't getting offers. Rather, she's chosen to focus on her family -- 8-year-old daughter Daisy and rocker boyfriend John Mellencamp. Ryan, now 51, literally disappeared from Hollywood by moving to New York.

Action superstar Jason Statham joins forces with Jennifer Lopez in a kick-ass new crime thriller. Parker is a slick and gritty modern day film-noir that packs in plenty of action and is out to rent and own on DVD and Blu-ray from 8th July. We have three copies of the Blu-ray to give away to our readers.
Statham (The Expendables, Killer Elite) is Parker, a hardened professional criminal and an expert on pulling off impossible heists. He’ll do whatever it takes to get what he wants and lives by his own code of ethics – don’t steal from people who can’t afford it and don’t hurt people who don’t deserve it. But when he’s double-crossed by his crew and left for dead it’s time for payback.

We’ve come to the end of our Man of Steel takeover but we’ve saved the best until last and we get to hear from the one and only Henry Cavill who takes on the lead role as Superman / Clark Kent. If you’ve missed them, today we’ve had interviews with Zack Snyder and cast members Ayelet Zurer and Antje Traue and Michael Shannon, and Russell Crowe, Kevin Costner, Diane Lane and Amy Adams who plays Lois Lane. All of the interviews have been conducted by James Kleinmann who got to fly off to Warner Bros. Studio in Burnank California to chat with all these megastars!
In this interview James asks Cavill about wearing one of the most famous costumes in the film industry. He talks about the first time he put the costume on, how that felt and how he realised his own personal Superman. We hear...

While promoting "Man of Steel," Henry Cavill and Russell Crowe spoke about their first meeting, which took place about fifteen years ago, when Cavill was only 15 years old. That meeting gave the actor enough motivation to ultimately get him to this point. "When I was in boarding school, [Russell] filmed a scene from his movie 'Proof of Life,'" said Cavill. "[I was an extra in] the background. And at one stage, [all the extras] were standing there in a big semi-circle, between set-ups, just staring at [Russell]. And I thought, 'We look really weird. Why are we staring at this man?' I want to be an actor, so why don't I got up and talk to him, ask him for some advice. I said, 'Hi, my name is Henry. I'm thinking of becoming an actor, do you have any advice, tips, what's it like?' And he said, 'it's good, pay is good, but sometimes they don't treat you so good.

Back in 2000, Russell Crowe filmed a movie with Meg Ryan titled Proof Of Life. The film was modestly successful and is mostly remembered as where Ryan and Crowe began an affair that would be tabloid fodder for months and lead to the actress divorcing Dennis Quaid. But, an interesting new story has arisen and it will now be remembered as the movie where Crowe first met Henry Cavill and helped send him on his way to becoming the Man Of Steel. This video from Access Hollywood has Cavill and...

Jason Statham dresses up as a “Texan” and does a horrific accent in the new actioner “Parker”. Find out why he’s subjecting himself and us to this barbarism in a new trailer and featurette for the upcoming movie, co-starring Jennifer Lopez as some kind of hacker or some such. I suspect “Parker” will go the way of most Statham movies — good but not great, enjoyed by fans of the Stath, but few else. As one of those fans, I don’t mind that one bit. Taylor Hackford of “Proof of Life” and “Ray” fame directs. Parker (Jason Statham) is a professional thief who lives by a personal code of ethics: Don’t steal from people who can’t afford it and don’t hurt people who don’t deserve it. But on his latest heist, his crew double crosses him, steals his stash, and leaves him for dead. Determined...
