I was a game show junkie, beginning in grade school in the 1960s and continuing through the 70s and 80s. I've even been ON two game shows. But somehow I missed this show, which apparently lasted only a few weeks. Alex Trebek does his level best to make sense of the mess, but every aspect of the show is poorly conceived and/or executed.
The graphics and set design are ugly. The contestants are in soundproof booths - but the lighting designers couldn't figure out how to light the inside of the booth properly. Everyone has ghoulish shadows. The game play itself, with its dares and double-dares, is clunky and time-consuming. The electronic music score, and sound effects, are grating. (Supposedly the music was resurrected for another game a few years later, since clearly nobody would remember it.) The funniest bit of all is the bonus round. It's not worth your time to describe the whole process, but the player is pitted against three "PhDs" (we're never told exactly who they are or what their areas of expertise might be) who try to guess the answer from a series of clues selected by the contestant. The three guys are the dumpiest, most stereotypical "academics" they could find, and like the contestants, they are poorly lit in their little glass booths.
If you're a game show junkie, you need to watch one episode to see what can happen when a production crew makes all the wrong decisions.
