The film tells the story of the real marquis of Salamanca from his arrival to Madrid in 1830s to his death in 1883. Although not historically accurated (mainly in his personal life facts) it is an interesting biopic showing some historical events such as the origin of Spanish railways and marquis' efforts to be its pioneer (although, as stated in the film, at last the first line was the Barcelona-Mataró) and the creation of the salt monopoly. Also the intend of beginning a new, more cosmopolitan Madrid in the style of Paris' boulevard Saint Germaine that finally ended up as a single neighborhood and the opening of a new, more modern theatre called el circo. Although only some facts of marquis' life are shown and some important ones are omitted (the creation of the Isabel the II bank, that ended up in failure) it is an interesting film overall with great set designs and artistic direction and nice performances by Alfredo Mayo as José de Salamanca y Mayol and Conchita Montes as Maria Buschental.
