Actor, writer and filmmaker Honey Lauren has set the cast for her feature directorial debut “Mistake.”

The indie drama stars Dominic Bogart, Matt Bogart (“Jersey Boys Live!”), Emmy winner and Golden Globe nominee Kay Lenz (“House”), Brett Cullen and Jiji Hise (“The Ballad of Buster Scruggs”) alongside Lauren.

The film follows Larry Benson (Dominic Bogart) who is born intersex in the deep south in 1941. His parents must choose, boy or girl. With hormone treatment Larry is raised as a man. The deep south is anything but an understanding environment in which to realize that a mistake has been made.

Brandon Keener, Cameron Deane Stewart, Natalie Makenna, Rachel Alig, Elaine Alexander, Michael Villar, Jennifer Daily (“Casual”), Max Emerson (“Single All the Way”), Carrie Gibson and Jaime Gallagher round out the supporting cast.

Brad Wyman (“Monster”), Erik Bakken and Davey Robertson are serving as producers. Production is underway in Kentucky and Los Angeles.

Another week, another episode of Aew: Dark which this week features thirteen(!) matches… Yes, the match count is creeping up, something I’m not a fan of! Anyway, on with the review.

Match #1: Christopher Daniels def. Brian Pillman Jr.

My Thoughts: It’s great to see Christopher Daniels in action again, even if it is on Dark. This was a decent back and forth, with an outcome that was always in doubt (which is great to see!). Daniels hit the Bme for the crowd-pleasing finish.

My Score: 2.5 out of 5 Match #2: Emi Sakura def. Jada Stone

My Thoughts: Jada Stone got one move in here, I’m not sure that even qualifies as a typical Aew quasi-squash Tbh. Not much wet on here, so not much more to say than that!

Stop the presses! Like you or I, James Gunn likes to read! Imagine a world where someone can leave a pile of books atop their coffee table without the internet taking it as a sign of things to come. Look, it’s the day before New Year’s Eve, and this is entertaining. Join me as I mine one of Gunn’s recent tweets to report on a thing that isn’t happening. Recently, someone spotted three volumes of Grant Morrison’s iconic Batman and Robin comic book series atop Gunn’s coffee table. Naturally, people started thinking the books could be source material for an upcoming project from DC Films. It’s not an impossible leap, but Gunn says it’s not happening.

Another week, another episode of Aew: Dark. This one features nine matches filmed at Aew Universal and another title defence for Pac, filmed over in Dublin, as part of the travelling All-Atlantic Championship – something that is, right now, one of the more intriguing aspects of Aew’s championship scene.

Match #1: Kiera Hogan def. Allie Reks

My Thoughts: A short, boring quasi-squash match that did nothing for either woman involved. Kiera Hogan really hasn’t shone as much in Aew as she did back in Impact… even as part of Jade Cargill’s crew.

My Score: 1 out of 5 Match #2: Alex Reynolds def. Ryan Nemeth

My Thoughts: The Dark Order / Wingmen feuding continues but this time in singles competition. A singles match that, honestly, shouldn’t have gone on so long or had Reynolds look so weak. Why Nemeth had the upper hand in this one for so long bemuses me…...

This review is based off a volume that collects Batgirl #1-6.

For me, the past five or six years of Batgirl comics have been a mixed bag. Don’t get me wrong, I love the character of Barbara Gordon and am not naysaying any creators who’ve worked on the books by any means. It’s just that the tone of each particular run has been undoubtedly polarizing.

I think we can all agree that Gail Simone is a master of her craft, but some felt her New 52 tour of Batgirl went too dark, a product of that era. Personally, I really dug the material she put out. Gotham City is a dark, rough place and I like my comics to reflect that.

But when Brenden Fletcher, Cameron Stewart and Babs Tarr took over, they moved Ms. Gordon to Burnside, a hipster borough, and gave the book a very “young” feel,...

If you were a fan of the Cameron Stewart-Brenden Fletcher-Babs Tarr era of Batgirl from the New 52 and were a bit lukewarm to her recent trips abroad, you’ll be thrilled to know that she’ll indeed be returning home to Burnside before the month concludes.

If that wasn’t enough to grab your attention, the Son of Penguin will be making his debut. Estranged from his mob boss father, it should be most interesting to see what kind of impact he’ll have on the life of Barbara Gordon. Does he share his papa’s temperament? Or his affinity for parasols? Will he possibly end up being – gasp – a love interest for our heroine? Those are but a few reasons to pick up this issue.

Last season, NBC tried a very unconventional approach with Aquarius by releasing the entire season online and then airing episodes on television. Supposedly, most people still watched the show on TV (to low ratings). Will the show perform any better in season two? Will it be cancelled or renewed for a third season? Stay tuned.

Review:

Cameron Stewart and Brenden Fletcher take us on a really wild and trippy adventure as we explore warped moments of Barbara Gordon’s memories. The villain of the arc, Fugue, has managed to get inside Barbara’s head and is stealing her secrets with plans to sell them to her enemies. While there is some fun here with great art by the various contributors (each getting a moment based on the memory), I just wasn’t pulled into this story.

Filler really is a kind of a dirty word to use to refer to a comic, and Batgirl #47 definitely isn’t that. However, with artist Babs Tarr sidelined for this issue and the main plot of discovering what is behind, this issue is a slight drop in quality compared to the spectacular wedding issue and last issue’s battle with gangs and gentrification. We do get to see Batgirl work in a group dynamic with both Spoiler and Bluebird, who she somehow forgot from Batman Eternal as they find out without a shadow of a doubt that it was Batgirl, who hacked her own data and tipped off the police about the kids from Forster Lane being in gangs. This leads to more self-doubt...

Two words could be used to describe comics in 2015: scandal and rebirth. The scandals happened off the pages at both companies large and small, and the rebirth happened in the comics themselves.

Graphic Policy reported that former Dark Horse Comics editor-in-chief Scott Allie bit writer Joe Harris (X-Files Season Ten) at the Boom! Studios party at San Diego Comic Con, and he was demoted to “executive editor” even though an assault of this kind would be grounds for dismissal at almost any other company. There was also another ethical breach at Dark Horse when The Rainbow Hub journalist Emma Houxbois reported that former Bleeding Cool editor Hanna Means-Shannon broke a Dark Horse-related story while it was under embargo and didn’t disclose the fact that she was taking a job with the company.

Like Barbara Gordon’s agile mind and dancer-like fighting form, writers Cameron Stewart and Brenden Fletcher tend to balance several plot threads in each Batgirl issue, and this one is no exception. The three main ones are real estate developers using teenagers in various street gangs to drive out tenants so they can gentrify Burnside, Stephanie Brown aka Spoiler getting a bounty put on her because she witnessed Eiko Hasigawa (Catwoman’s lover during Genevieve Valentine’s run on the book) executing mob leaders, and also her continued lapses of memory, which might have led to a scientific breakthrough. Although, Stewart and Fletcher’s plot has a lot of moving parts, it comes organically out of character relationships and the dark,...

Not only does Steve Orlando’s Midnighter comic star a gay man, it tells blunt, sex-positive stories about that character. The main cast of characters in the upcoming main Avengers comic All-New, All-Different Avengers has only one white dude.

While there is still a lot of work on the road to a utopia of complete social justice, there is a trend of progressivism in some of today’s superhero comics that is impossible to ignore.

“There’s certainly a long way to go, but [the comics industry] is moving in the right direction,” said Orlando via phone interview on Oct. 23.

Books like Batgirl and Cyborg from DC Comics as well as Unbeatable Squirrel Girl and Ms. Marvel down the lane at Marvel coalesce to paint a picture of superhero comics that not only includes a solid focus on minority and women characters, but also features progressive themes concerning identity, racial justice, body image and more.

Julian Assange inspires an Asterix character

Writer Jean-Yves Ferri and artist Didier Conrad have turned to a surprising inspiration for a new character in the 36th book in the classic French comic series, Asterix and the Missing Scroll.

The journalist called Confoundtheirpolitix - a character caught up in the battle against Julius Caesar's propaganda machine - was inspired by WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange.

According to Agence France-Presse, he came close to being named Wikilix, which would have been no more on the nose than your average Asterix character (we're looking at you, old man Geriatrix).

The first panel I attended at New York Comic Con was the Lgbt in Comics panel on Thursday, October 8. It was sponsored by TimesOUT, an Lgbt affiliate of the New York Times. The lineup was quite star-studded and possibly the first time that three bisexual men have sat on a panel at a comics convention together. First of all, I’d like to give a round of applause to the cleverness of putting an artist named Bengal on a comic book featuring a tiger themed villain and extended fight sequences of Batgirl against tigers. Batgirl #44 begins immediately after last issue when the new villain Velvet Tiger kidnapped Jo, the fiancee of Barbara Gordon’s friend Alysia and also framed her friend/gadget provider Qadir for murder. The plot of this issue involving the rescue of Jo, several showdowns with Velvet Tiger, and almost a half dozen supporting characters is packed to the brim by writers Cameron Stewart and Brenden Fletcher. However, the sheer expressiveness of Bengal’s art and Serge Lapointe’s colors along with a nice dose of adorable in the several romantic scenes keep the issue afloat and entertaining.

With the news and controversy about its upcoming Joker variant cover which was pulled, Batgirl and its creative time have been in the spotlight for good or ill. At the beginning, Batgirl #40 is a little confusing with lots of transhuman and AI ideas connected to the villains that Batgirl has been fighting since the new creative team took over. However, Brenden Fletcher, Cameron Stewart, Babs Tarr, and Maris Wicks end up sticking the landing and have Batgirl exorcise demons in a quite literal way with the help of her supporting cast and the people of Burnside. Babs Tarr and Cameron Stewart create a flurry of panels to simulate Batgirl’s quick fighting style, and Tarr also gets to take another crack at showing her eidetic memory.

Originally conceived some eight years ago by Matthew Spradlin, Bad Kids Go To Hell (the movie’s original title) originally debuted as a four issue comic mini-series from Antarctic Press in 2009. Fast forward to 2014 and the film, now re-titled Haunting of Crestview High silently hits the UK market courtesy of 101 Films, without all the hype that surrounded the 2012 Us release – which may not actually be a bad thing.

Now don’t get me wrong, I enjoyed the film but I don’t think it ever lives up to the hype that surrounded its original Us release – which is maybe why the films UK debut took a couple of years – but as a fan of the John Hughes canon of films...

Even though a lot of us have put our coming out process behind us, there are also a lot of people, young and old, who are dealing with it now or will very soon and the new film, Geography Club, is the kind of movie that appeals to everyone.

Based on former AfterElton editor Brent Hartinger’s first book in the Russel Middlebrook series, the film version was written by Edmund Entin and directed by his brother, Gary Entin. The central role of Russel is played by Cameron Dean Stewart (Pitch Perfect) who brings a realness and honesty to his portrayal of a teenager trying desperately to connect with other people.

Breaking Glass Pictures, Huffington Pictures, and Shoreline Entertainment have announced the November 15th North American theatrical release of Geography Club, produced by Michael Huffington of Huffington Pictures. Starring Cameron Deane Stewart Pitch Perfect, Justin Deeley 'Drop Dead Diva', '90210', and Nikki Blonsky Hairspray, Geography Club has been a hit on the festival circuit in the past year, culminating in an Audience Award for Best First Feature at Los Angeles Outfest.

It's that time of year again -- or what used to be that time of year. NewFest is here (September 6-11). Yes, the celebration of gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, and what-have-you cinema is back for its 25th anniversary. The main venue will be the Film Society of Lincoln Center's Walter Reade Theater, considered by some to be the best cinema in Manhattan, one that boasts a truly superior sound system.

(Anyone who ever attended NewFest when it was held at the New School with its second-rate visuals and third-rate resonance will rejoice.)

In the past, this deliciously raucous event has screened a mixed bag of semi-brilliant to much-less-so offerings, many you'll never ever get to see anywhere else on a "big" screen whether you reside in the Big Apple or in Idaho. On the plus side, watching a woefully dreadful movie with a roomful of knowing Glbtq cinephiles is often a hoot.

Shoreline Entertainment has picked up "Geography Club," an upcoming adaptation of Brent Hartinger's novel of the same name. The film, from Huffington Pictures, is produced by Michael Huffington and Anthony Bretti. (Huffington is the former husband of this site's Editor-in-Chief.)

"Geography Club" focuses on Russel (Cameron Dean Stewart), who finds companionship in a group of students all hiding their sexual preferences. Nikki Blonsky, Marin Hinkle and Scott Bakula co-star in the film, which is based on the first novel in Hartinger's Russel Middlebrook series.

"This film is a clever, feel-good, coming-of-age story with an important social message. Cameron Deane Stewart delivers an outstanding performance along with a magnificent supporting cast," Shoreline CEO Morris Ruskin said in a statement.

After a recent limited theatrical release across North America, Phase 4 Films has announced that they have acquired DVD and digital distribution rights to Bad Kids Go To Hell:

Los Angeles, CA (January 9, 2013) – Phase 4 Films announced today that they have acquired all digital and DVD distribution rights to Bad Kids Go To Hell, the thrilling dark comedic heir to The Breakfast Club, from filmmakers Matthew Spradlin and Barry Wernick. In addition to directing the film, Spradlin co-wrote the comic and screen treatment with Wernick, who also produced.
