UK’s Odeon Cinemas Expands Family Offer
In a bid to bolster its draw for families, the UK’s Odeon Cinemas is expanding the scope of its “adults pay kids prices” deal. The scheme will see admits for one adult and one child from as little as £10 for an Odeon Cinema and £15 for an Odeon Luxe throughout 2024. The AMC-owned chain says it’s making the investment into its family offerings as data has shown that affordability and convenience are the biggest concerns for families when considering activities, particularly over the summer holidays. With the opening weekend of Inside Out 2 marking Odeon’s busiest since National Cinema Day last September, turnstiles have been on fire. The UK gross for IO2 through Sunday stands at $40.2M while such titles with family appeal on deck include Despicable Me 4 on July 12 and Harold and the Purple Crayon on August 2. Cross-cultural misunderstandings about in Alex Herron’s atmospheric fable about a young woman looking for her roots in a far-off land. A thriller dressed up as a horror film, perhaps to please Shudder, Leave is the first serious venture into fiction for the director, who is best known for his music videos – and, indeed, it uses the black metal scene as a backdrop in places. Although most of the action takes place in his native Norway, it’s mostly filmed in English, which other characters speak for the benefit of its American-born heroine, and is squarely aimed at an international audience.
She is Hunter (Alicia von Rittberg), found in a graveyard as a baby in an overblown opening scene which might have been lifted from one of Herron’s videos. The cross around her neck is interpreted as a Satanic symbol and causes consternation, but Raylan (Clarence Smith), the man who finds her,...

The glut of shows being pulled from streaming services continues.
Starz has pulled a trio of titles – Dangerous Liaisons, Becoming Elizabeth and Step Up from its streaming service. All three titles have been canceled but it’s another example of a company taking finished shows off their own service.
It comes after HBO Max pulled series such as Westworld, The Nevers, Raised By Wolves, The Time Traveler’s Wife as well as a slew of reality shows including FBoy Island and a raft of animated titles from its service last year.
Over the weekend, HBO Max also pulled a number of episodes of the original Looney Tunes, including seasons 16 to 31, as well as three seasons of The Flintstones. These shows were removed after their licenses expired.
The strategy at Warner Bros. Discovery was in part formed by tax write offs that it could gain after the merger, as well as interest...

The Tudor dynasty is the TV gift that just keeps on giving. Ever since the breakout hit of Showtime's 2007 period drama "The Tudors," many a network has followed in their footsteps by sinking some cash into the world of frilled shirts, looming castles, and royal extravagance. The only thing more exciting than the realism and royal schadenfreude of "The Crown" is when you mix political and personal drama, dial up the dramatics and make it extra sexy. Over the years, the result has been a dozen different period dramas taking this approach (hence our post-"Bridgerton" world).
But "Becoming Elizabeth" offered a refreshing change of pace. Though it once again traces the Tudor story through the eyes of Queen Elizabeth I, the series created by Anya Reiss prioritizes Elizabeth's personal experience over the epic history being made in her lifetime.

Queen Elizabeth I's teenage years will no longer be charted at Starz.
Deadline has revealed the premium cabler has canceled the Alicia von Rittberg series after just one season.
The series launched in the U.S. and Starz territories around the globe in June.
Reviews were decent, but Starz hadn't been forthcoming about viewership statistics, which could signal that the interest was not high enough to sustain the series.
Here's the logline:
Long before she ascended the throne, young Elizabeth Tudor, played by Alicia von Rittberg, was an orphaned teenager who became embroiled in the political and sexual politics of the English court.
The death of King Henry VIII sees his nine-year-old son Edward, played by Oliver Zetterström, take the throne and sets into motion a dangerous scramble for power when Elizabeth, Edward and their sister Mary, played by Romola Garai find themselves pawns in a game between the great...

It was a short reign for the Starz royal drama Becoming Elizabeth, as the network has canceled the series after just one season, as reported by Deadline. Created by British playwright Anya Reiss, the historical drama revolved around the teenage years of Queen Elizabeth I (Alicia von Rittberg), who, after the death of Henry VIII, is caught up in a frantic power struggle with her siblings. As her nine-year-old brother Edward ascends to the throne, Elizabeth fights to control her own destiny and take power as the men around her attempt to claim her sovereignty. The cancelation comes after disappointingly low viewing figures for the first season. According to Live+Same Day Nielsen data, the season averaged 136,000 viewers, with the June 12 premiere being the most-watched episode at just 158,000 total viewers. In addition to Rittberg, the show also starred Romola Garai as Mary Tudor, Jessica Raine as Catherine Parr, Tom Cullen as Thomas Seymour,...

Starz has canceled “Becoming Elizabeth,” a historical costume drama series about the Tudors, after one season, an individual with knowledge of the decision told IndieWire.
The show created by Anya Reiss and starring Alicia von Rittberg premiered August 12 but failed to capture much of an audience and posted low ratings that dipped throughout its 8-episode run.
“Becoming Elizabeth” continued Starz’s fascination with the 16th Century Tudor family after finding a hit with 2013’s “The White Queen” and two other spinoff series based on English history. “Becoming Elizabeth” specifically focused on a young Elizabeth I when she was still an orphaned teenager and the death of King Henry VIII set into motion a scramble for power and the throne.
The series also starred Romola Garai, Jessica Raine, Tom Cullen, and Bella Ramsey and was produced by The Forge for Starz. The show was also notable for boasting an all-women writing staff as led by Reiss.

Exclusive: Starz has canceled its freshman drama Becoming Elizabeth, Deadline has confirmed.
According to Live+Same Day Nielsen data, the series failed to capture audiences meaningfully; its premiere August 12 was the most-watched episode but only mustered 158,000 total viewers. In the weeks following, episodes continued to lose viewers, with the average L+Sd viewership for the season at 136,000.
Among the audience it did maintain, most were not within the ad-friendly 18-49 demographic. Becoming Elizabeth averaged a 0.01 demo rating throughout the season, and only two episodes (the premiere and one other) were able to climb to a 0.02.
The series created by Anya Reiss followed the early life of Queen Elizabeth I of England (portrayed by Alicia von Rittberg), an orphaned teenager who becomes embroiled in the politics of the English court on her journey to secure the crown. Actress-film director Romola Garai, who plays Mary Tudor, Queen of England and Ireland (July 1553 to November 1558) also known as ‘Blood Mary’, delved into the tragedy of her complex character in the historical drama ‘Becoming Elizabeth’. The series features Alicia Von Rittberg as Queen Elizabeth I.
Talking about Mary I, Romola said: “She was forced into being a mix of different things by circumstances. She was very religious, obviously, but she was an intelligent, sophisticated, sensitive, admirable woman. She could be really good fun.”
Romola continued: “People often spoke about her being funny and clever, but she was forced into this horrific situation where her mother was cast out by her father, King Henry VIII, when he met Anne Boleyn, his eventual second wife, and was excommunicated. Mary was whisked away from her mother, with whom she had a very close relationship, at the age of 12, and she never saw her again.

[Warning: The following contains Major spoilers for the Becoming Elizabeth Season 1 finale, “To Death We Must Stoop.”] Becoming Elizabeth Season 1 delivered a fresh take on the Tudor era. Where much of that history is romanticized in media and the violence of the time is downplayed, the Starz drama — starring Alicia von Rittberg as Elizabeth I in her teen years — looks the gruesome reality dead-on to tell the tale of how one of England’s longest-reining monarchs became the cautious, calculating survival expert she was. Much of Season 1 focused on the grooming relationship between Elizabeth and Sir Thomas Seymour (Tom Cullen), uncle to Elizabeth’s younger half-brother, King Edward IV (Oliver Zetterström), and husband to Catherine Parr (Jessica Raine), King Henry VIII’s last wife. Creator Anya Reiss spoke with TV Insider about Becoming Elizabeth Season 1 and the tumultuous finale, saying Elizabeth’s story in this show is “meant to be what makes her cautious.” Here, Reiss breaks down...

This royal romance will have heads rolling. In the June 19 episode of Becoming Elizabeth, Princess Elizabeth (Alicia von Rittberg) and Thomas Seymour (Tom Cullen) make their feelings for one another known. But don't get too excited about this potential pairing, as it couldn't be more inappropriate. Not only is Thomas married to Elizabeth's guardian, former stepmother Catherine Parr (Jessica Raine), but he's also about 20 years older than the future queen. The episode kicks off with Thomas barging into Elizabeth's room, ripping off her covers as she lies in bed wearing nothing but a sheer nightgown. As Elizabeth's maid protests, Thomas bluntly retorts, "I'm to rouse my...

Mary Tudor isn’t so keen about Catherine Parr and Thomas Seymour’s hasty marriage. In this exclusive sneak peek from Becoming Elizabeth Episode 2, airing Sunday, June 19, Elizabeth Tudor (Alicia von Rittberg) is caught between her devoutly Catholic sister, Mary (Romola Garai), and Catherine (Jessica Raine) and Thomas (Tom Cullen), as Mary demands she leave and side with her against their brother Edward. Speaking in a secluded, dimly lit hallway, Mary urges her sister not to trust their step-parents. “Catherine, I once too thought wise and good and a friend,” she says. “But then look how she mocks our father’s memory with that man. I feel sick of what I hear about them both, what I have seen. You are to leave.” Unbeknownst to her, they were not alone in the corridor. “The King does so love his nuanced religious commentary,” Thomas says as he approaches the women, adding,...

All hail Elizabeth-the-teen, pre-queen. Just in time for the Jubilee of her namesake Elizabeth II, England’s longest reigning monarch, Starz and creator Anya Reiss (“EastEnders”) gaze back to another, lesser-known micro-slice of Tudor history in “Becoming Elizabeth.” The series asks: what was happening to the wicked smart, red-haired “virgin” queen-to-be in the tumultuous months following the death of her father, Henry VIII, in 1547 — and over a decade after Pops beheaded her unpopular mother Anne Boleyn?
The word orphan doesn’t quite describe the politically fraught and emotionally unstable situation in which the vulnerable 14-year-old (Alicia von Rittberg) finds herself. Of Henry’s three legitimate children, the third in line for the royal scepter enters a game of thrones in earnest with her Anglican younger half-brother Edward (Oliver Zetterstrom) and Catholic older half-sister “Bloody” Mary (Romola Garai).
Meanwhile, Henry’s widowed sixth wife, Catherine Parr (Jessica Raine) maneuvers to take...

It’s not that Elizabeth Tudor (Alicia von Rittberg) can’t see the board. “It’s a great game of keep or kill to them all,” she remarks with no small amount of bitterness when she’s sent without say to live with Catherine Parr (Jessica Raine), widow of her father King Henry VIII. At the point we meet her in Starz’s Becoming Elizabeth, however, she’s not yet learned to play the game for herself.
Her evolution from pawn to key player comprises the narrative spine of the series, and it’s no spoiler to acknowledge here that she’ll eventually go on to win the whole thing, ruling over England for nearly half a century. But creator Anya Reiss brings to Elizabeth I’s saga an intimate perspective that prioritizes personal experience over the epic sweep of history. The result...

All hail Alicia von Rittberg! The German-born actress is following the likes of Dame Judi Dench, Cate Blanchett and Dame Helen Mirren by playing Queen Elizabeth I in Starz's Becoming Elizabeth. However, don't expect Alicia's performance to replicate the A-listers who've previously tackled the role. In an exclusive interview with E! News, Alicia admitted it was "so intimidating" taking on the Tudor queen, but she eventually felt relief when she realized Becoming Elizabeth tackles the early years of the iconic royal. As she put it, "So there is not that much comparison." Alicia also kept a mantra from Helen—who has played both...

Few British dynasties have inspired as much material in recent years as that of the Tudors. From Showtime’s aptly named “The Tudors,” to Hilary Mantel’s book/play/series “Wolf Hall,” to the current Broadway musical “Six,” the turbulent reign of Henry VIII and his six equally turbulent marriages have clearly had no shortage of retellings. At this point, those who want to tell a story about this family have to find a new way into its well-trod history.
Anya Reiss’ “Becoming Elizabeth,” premiering June 12 on Starz, aims to solve this problem by picking up at a more unusual point in Henry VIII’s history — more specifically in 1547, mere minutes after his death. In so doing, Reiss gives herself the gift of untangling the uniquely messy matters of succession, self-preservation, and the escalating tensions between Protestants and Catholics. What’s more, the series can give more consideration to Henry...

She would eventually become one of England’s greatest monarchs, but first, the teenage Elizabeth Tudor (Alicia von Rittberg) had to survive the medieval court’s political, religious, and sexual intrigue. How she does that is the stuff of Becoming Elizabeth, Starz‘s new luscious drama, which begins in 1547 when the future Queen Elizabeth I is orphaned after the death of her father King Henry VIII (he ordered her mother Anne Boleyn executed when Elizabeth was a toddler). “She’s dropped into this void. It’s incredibly dangerous and scary and yet tempting,” says von Rittberg. “She knows exactly who she is and how to play by the rules but yet she is a young girl who just wants to experience life and make her own decisions and not be influenced by her family.” That’s a tough want, considering her nine-year-old brother Edward (Oliver Zetterström) is soon crowned king.

Becoming Elizabeth, premiering Sunday, June 12 at 9/8c on Starz, tackles relatively unfamiliar territory.
Set during Elizabeth I’s teenage years, the series explores her tumultuous journey in the immediate aftermath of Henry VIII’s death. Elizabeth’s nine-year-old brother Edward (The Romanoffs’ Oliver Zetterström) takes the throne, setting off a dangerous scramble for power with Henry’s surviving children — Elizabeth (Genius’ Alicia von Rittberg), Mary (Suffragette’s Romola Garai) and Edward— caught in the middle.

To celebrate the release of Being Elizabeth, the new historical series beginning on Starz this week, we had the pleasure of sitting down with the cast to find out all about the epic new show.
Long before she ascended the throne, young Elizabeth Tudor was an orphaned teenager who became embroiled in the political and sexual politics of the English court. The death of King Henry VIII sets into motion a dangerous scramble for power as his 9-year-old son is crowned king, and he and his sisters become pawns for the great families of England and the powers of Europe who vie for control of the country. To survive the young Elizabeth Tudor must learn the rules quickly at a time in which every man or woman of the court is on the wheel of fortune, which may take them to a position of great power one moment, or the executioner’s block the next.

Is it coincidence or accident that the petulant boy king who succeeds King Henry VIII in 1547 reminds me so much of Game of Thrones’ toxic Joffrey? Probably not. But poor little puppet Edward VI (Oliver Zetterström), whose time on the English throne will sadly be limited — spoiler alert: he dies at 15 — isn’t the focus of Becoming Elizabeth, a handsome and sensuous historical costume drama beginning what we hope is a several-season run on Starz. Center stage belongs to princeling Eddie’s older half-sister Elizabeth (a quietly compelling Alicia von Rittberg), the future legendary queen who’s the odd adolescent out when medieval England falls into political and religious disarray upon Henry’s death. Religious schism continues to roil the land, with young Edward representing his father’s new church and pious eldest sibling Mary (poignant Romola Garai), the daughter of the late Catherine of Aragon, adhering devoutly to her Catholic faith.

After the breakout hit of Showtime’s “The Tudors” in 2007 many period dramas tried to follow suit by dropping the bell sleeves and upping the sex and nudity. Sometimes, if a show really wanted to be daring, it would insert modern music or find some way to remind audiences, “These Tudos were just like you!”
Creator Anya Reiss’ “Becoming Elizabeth” attempts to do something different by trying its hardest to adhere to the history of the era. This isn’t to say viewers won’t see nudity or hear some electric guitar on the new Starz series, but for every moment like that there’s episodes devoted to characters discussing the distinction between Catholicism and Protestantism. Will this bore an audience used to “The Tudors” model of television? It’s certainly possible. But alongside some beautifully lyrical writing and a stellar cast the desire to tell Elizabeth’s story as...
