Film criticism has changed a lot over the years. There was a time when critics had no qualms about telling readers the whole plot of a movie, on or before opening weekend, up to and including the finale. The idea was, if you were reading criticism it meant you were interested in reading criticism, and you knew damn well that meant the critic was going to talk about what actually happens in the film. Then again motion pictures as a whole used to be a lot less rarefied. You’d buy a ticket and walk into a theater at any point in the film, stick around for the trailers and news reels and shorts, and then you’d watch another picture, and then maybe hang around to catch the first half of the movie you already saw the end of.
Nowadays, nobody wants to be spoiled. That’s understandable. In...

Sam Raimi, the director of the Tobey Maguire Spider-Man trilogy, returned to the superhero world to direct the Doctor Strange sequel Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness after the first movie’s director, Scott Derrickson, dropped out of the Marvel Cinematic Universe project over creative disagreements. Ever since the release of that movie, Raimi’s name has come up in rumors for more superhero movies, whether it be Avengers sequels or another Tobey Maguire Spider-Man movie… and while those haven’t panned out, here’s one that might: industry scooper Jeff Sneider reports on his website The InSneider that Raimi is nearing a deal to direct Doctor Strange 3 for Marvel.
Sneider wrote, “I’m told that Raimi is definitely coming back, which is no surprise as he really seemed to enjoy working with Marvel, as opposed to other filmmakers who have struggled to adapt to the studio’s process.

Rachel McAdams played Christine Palmer in director Scott Derrickson’s contribution to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the 2016 film Doctor Strange – but there was a time when we were told that Christine would not be appearing the follow-up, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. She did end up in that movie, though, and by working on that film, McAdams had the chance to work with director Sam Raimi. Now Deadline reports that Raimi and McAdams are aiming to re-team on the 20th Century Studios horror thriller Send Help, which Raimi will be producing and directing. McAdams is currently in talks to star in the film, but Deadline cautions that these negotiations are in early stages, and nothing is definite at this point.
Back in 2007, it was rumored that Sam Raimi would be producing a fantasy film with a screenplay written by Freddy vs. Jason and Friday the 13th 2009 writers Damian Shannon and Mark Swift.

Anybody down for a Doctor Strange In The Multiverse Of Madness reunion? No, we've not got confirmation of a Doctor Strange 3 directed by Sam Raimi just yet (although we do live in hope) — but we are getting word that one of the stars of the Evil Dead director's first foray into the MCU could be about to team up on a new horror thriller. According to Deadline, Rachel McAdams is circling a starring role in Send Help, a 20th Century Studios chiller on which Raimi will serve as both producer and director.
As we reported back in July, Send Help — based on an original script from Baywatch writing duo Damian Shannon and Mark Swift — is currently being pitched as an island-set two-hander that falls somewhere between Rob Reiner's Misery and Robert Zemeckis' Cast Away. Further details on the plot however remain strictly under wraps at this point in time,...

Rachel McAdams is set to reunite with Sam Raimi on his return to the horror genre for the upcoming film Send Help. More here.
At the tail-end of last week, news emerged that stated Sam Raimi had signed a deal to once again work with Marvel Studios, taking on the director’s chair for Doctor Strange 3. As you’ll know, the Evil Dead director made the most recent entry in the series, 2022’s Doctor Strange In The Multiverse Of Madness and the film – while very much suffering from typical MCU issues – went on to earn almost a billion dollars at the global box office in an era when that financial benchmark is far from guaranteed.

Acclaimed director Sam Raimi is set to make his long-awaited return to the horror genre with an upcoming thriller titled “Send Help.” The film will mark Raimi’s first pure horror project in over a decade and see the director reunite with an actor from his recent Marvel work.
Raimi is in talks with Rachel McAdams to star in “Send Help,” according to multiple reports. The film follows a character-driven mystery thriller storyline set on a remote island. Industry insiders compare the isolated island plot to classic suspense films like “Misery” and “Cast Away.” McAdams previously collaborated with Raimi on the blockbuster superhero movie “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.”
If the negotiations are successful, “Send Help” would continue Raimi’s documented practice of building long-term creative partnerships. The director commonly works with a close-knit group that includes actors like Bruce Campbell and composer Danny Elfman. Landing McAdams could...

We've been hearing that Marvel Studios was in the process of developing a third Doctor Strange movie for quite some time, and it sounds like the project has now settled on a director.
In the latest edition of his newsletter, Jeff Sneider reports that Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness director Sam Raimi has "all-but closed a deal" to return to helm the threequel.
In the Multiverse of Madness was met with pretty good reviews (73% on Rotten Tomatoes), and while it did prove to be somewhat divisive among MCU fans, it went on to take in over $950 million worldwide, meaning a third film was always a strong possibility.
Previous reports have claimed that Kevin Feige was eager to work with Raimi again, and the Evil Dead filmmaker was rumored to be the studio's top choice to direct Avengers: Secret Wars at one point.

Sometimes a trailer comes along that's a bit of a surprise, lurking in the peripheral of the hype cycle so that when it drops, it's a refreshing surprise. The teaser trailer for "Companion," from the team behind the 2022 horror hit "Barbarian," is just that kind of trailer. Featuring a sweetly sinister Jack Quaid and a truly terrified Sophie Thatcher, the teaser gives us a look into what could be one of next year's biggest surprise hits. The teaser is delightfully tongue-in-cheek, starting off with, "The studio that brought you 'The Notebook' cordially invites you to experience a new kind of love story," written in elegant cursive script, though it's clear that this movie will be nothing like "The Notebook."
Instead of following Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams on a heart-wrenching love story throughout their lives, it looks like we're going to watch Quaid and Thatcher as he torments her and threatens her,...

Jodie Foster made Emmy history by winning the award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Limited Series for her role in “True Detective: Night Country.” This marked the first time an actor from the critically-acclaimed HBO anthology series won an Emmy for their performance.
For years, the “True Detective” series featured standout performances but failed to receive Emmy recognition in acting categories. Past seasons starred major talents like Matthew McConaughey, Woody Harrelson, Rachel McAdams, and Mahershala Ali. Despite their acclaimed work, the show came up empty at television’s most prestigious awards ceremony.
Foster’s victory in the lead actress category ended this puzzling streak. She portrayed Detective Liz Danvers, an aging cop battling cynicism in her small Alaskan town. Foster bring renewed energy to the familiar character type. Critics praised her “exuberance” and ability to “flex her charisma,” similar to previous season leads.
Backstage after accepting her Emmy, Foster downplayed the personal significance.

Few losing streaks were more puzzling than the Television Academy’s longtime refusal to give an acting Emmy to a “True Detective” cast member. From Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson to Rachel McAdams and Mahershala Ali, many of the most acclaimed actors of their generation have spent a season on the HBO anthology series. But it took four seasons and the presence of Jodie Foster — who won Outstanding Lead Actress in a Limited Series for her role in “True Detective: Night Country” — to finally break the streak
Addressing members of the press backstage after winning her Emmy, Foster downplayed the importance of being the first “True Detective” cast member to win the coveted award. Instead, she spoke about the beauty of working with an ensemble and serving a story that’s larger than herself.

Ryan Gosling almost suited up as a superhero, and the story behind it is wild! Before joining the Barbie world or serenading us in La La Land, Gosling was eyeing a different kind of role—a superhero flick that once had the Wolverine himself, Hugh Jackman, attached. Yeah, imagine Gosling trading in his smooth, brooding charm for some crime-fighting action.

While we didn’t get to see him don a cape (or claws), just knowing he considered it has us wondering what could’ve been. Was this an alternate reality where Ken and Wolverine join forces? Maybe. Either way, this what-if is giving us some serious comic-book movie Fomo!

Tom Cruise keeps proving that there’s no greater love story than his love and passion for death-defying, gravity-bending stunts. The actor continuously makes it tougher for himself to top his records, as nobody else seems willing to push the limits quite like he does.

And to top it off, reports now claim that Cruise performed all the jaw-dropping stunts at the Olympic closing ceremony, live and unrestrained, all for the sheer thrill of it, and thus, did it absolutely for free. Tom Cruise is notorious for dodging brand deals and endorsements, so, this move in the most non-surprising way, is a pure Cruise! Here’s how it all went down.

Even after two decades since Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams graced the screen with their iconic performances in The Notebook, people’s love for the Nicholas Sparks-adaptation is still the same. Therefore, in a tribute to their sizzling chemistry, we’re taken back to 2005 when the duo earned the MTV Movie Award for Best Kiss.

While their onscreen smooch was certainly worth an award, let’s just say their acceptance speech was another kiss worth remembering. But this smoldering on-screen romance might have never happened, or could have taken a different course, had The Notebook cast Tom Cruise instead of Ryan Gosling.

Actors Tyrese and Taraji P. Henson go way back from their Baby Boy days. And since then, the singer believed that everyone was waiting to see their friendship blossom into something more. Although they never dated, Tyrese quipped that he didn’t feel too comfortable watching Henson with other men on screen.

The last several years of working on the “Only Murders in the Building” set have been filled with tons of pinch-me moments for Michael Cyril Creighton. But in Season 4 in particular, the actor jokes he’s been “extremely bruised.”
“I’d walk in and I’d be working with Eva Longoria, who I’m a giant fan of; or I’d be watching Eugene Levy do a scene. And then to get to spar with Zach Galifianakis, that wasn’t on my bingo card. I didn’t know that was going to happen, and it is one of my favorite things I’ve done on screen,” the actor told TheWrap. “It’s always surprising and exciting to walk on that set, because you just don’t know what legend you’re going to be acting with that day.”

Wonder Woman (2017) was one of the rare films from the Dceu that managed to wow critics after a string of what were considered mediocre films. It delved into the backstory of Diana, who was introduced in Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice. However, while being one of the most successful female-led superhero films, the film almost ended up committing one of Hollywood’s most notorious sins when it came to casting a particular role for Wonder Woman.

It looks like “fetch” really is not going to happen, and Lacey Chabert, who memorably portrayed Gretchen Wieners in the teen classic Mean Girls, should stop trying to make it happen — according to her daughter, who naturally had no idea what the term referenced.
The Hallmark actress, who is parent to 8-year-old daughter Julia along with husband David Nehdar, told the Today show’s Hoda Kotb, “When she was younger, she was like, ‘What’s fetch, why does everyone say that to you?'”
“She asked me a couple years ago, ‘Mom, do other people watch those movies that you make?’ And I was like, ‘Yes, baby, they’re not just for you,'” she said, wrapping up the amusing anecdote.

Ontario talent has long starred onscreen in Hollywood, from Ryan Gosling and Mike Myers to Rachel McAdams and Sandra Oh.
But just as the province has become a key Hollywood production hub for the major studios and streamers, top global film and TV producers are also embracing local below-the-line talent to realize their creative ambitions behind the camera.
“When the amazing shows come and they bring the crazy scripts and the ambitiousness of it all, we’re able to meet the challenge, which is satisfying to see,” Shayne Fox, who has just received her third Emmy nomination for her production design work on the series What We Do in the Shadows, tells The Hollywood Reporter about doing her best work in the FX sandbox.

An opening night screening at the Toronto Film Festival was interrupted by pro-Palestinian protesters rallying against the Royal Bank of Canada, which is the official bank partner of TIFF.
The four protesters entered the Princess of Wales Theatre ahead of the 6 p.m. showing of “Nutcrackers,” a dramedy starring Ben Stiller and directed by David Gordon Green, while chanting, “Rbc funds genocide,” in an apparent reference to the bank’s ties to Israel, as the country’s war with Gaza enters its 11th month.
The protesters held signs with messages including “Rbc is killing our future,” as seen in videos posted by New York Times reporter Kyle Buchanan. The protesters were escorted out of the theater by security after about five minutes.
As TIFF CEO Cameron Bailey continued through his opening remarks, ignoring the interruption, the audience seated for “Nutcrackers” booed the protesters and shouted back, “Go home!” and “Go away!

Watch the trailer for the movie below, before it premieres on Netflix later this month.
“Will & Harper” premiered earlier this year at the Sundance Film Festival, where it received warm reviews (Manohla Dargis called it “a momentous cross-country journey of discovery” in the New York Times) and garnered a standing ovation. Florence Pugh has played many strong and intense roles in her career. She has made a mark for herself in films like Midsommar, Little Women, and Fighting with My Family. Pugh will, however, face her most intense yet softest role in the upcoming A24 drama We Live In Time, which also features Andrew Garfield.

There are certain in-jokes among us chronically online film enthusiasts that'll probably get you strange looks if you crack 'em devoid of context in the real world. Take Zack Snyder's "Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga'Hoole," an animated fantasy epic that made $139.7 million at the box office, yet, as the internet's running gag goes, nobody has actually seen. Then there's /Film's own recurring bit of referring to Mark Wahlberg as a hamburger salesman, which is more factual that you may've realized. However, if you really want to baffle impress your normie pals with your deep-cut knowledge of niche social media humor, all you need to do is applaud Emma Stone for her representation of the Asian-American community.
To clarify for all you fine folks who've no idea what I'm talking about -- this now nine-year-old punchline involving the "Superbad" veteran was birthed by Cameron Crowe's controversial bomb "Aloha.

A hot sales title and potential Oscar contender is generating buzz on the festival circuit: Tim Fehlbaum’s tension-filled drama, “September 5.” If any studio feels like adding another worthy awards hopeful to its slate, this film could go far under the right guidance.
The film, which has received outstanding reviews at both Venice and Telluride, could make a significant impact given its timely and compelling story. Set on Sept. 5, 1972, it portrays the international hostage crisis involving the Israeli Olympic team, as it unfolded live on global television. However, the story is told from the perspective of the broadcasters. The period drama features a talented ensemble cast, including John Magaro, Peter Sarsgaard, Ben Chaplin and Leonie Benesch.
“September 5” is a taut, suspenseful thriller, and even if you’ve seen (and hopefully admired) Steven Spielberg’s “Munich” (2005), this retelling more than warrants its perspective, reminiscent of previous Oscar winners like “Spotlight” and “All the President’s Men.

Controversy has resurfaced over the 2015 romantic comedy “Aloha” and its handling of an Asian-American character. The star-filled movie directed by Cameron Crowe is coming to the streaming service Netflix this September. Its arrival reopens discussion about casting choices and representation in Hollywood.
When it premiered, “Aloha” disappointed at the box office and with critics. In it, Bradley Cooper plays a military contractor who returns to Hawaii. There, he gets caught in a love triangle involving his ex Rachel McAdams and Air Force pilot Allison Ng, played by Emma Stone. Ng’s background is described as part Native Hawaiian, part Chinese, and part Swedish. Stone’s casting upset some who said it ignored authentic Asian representation.
This “whitewashing” distracted from the movie. It made only $26 million on a $37-52 million budget and earned a low 20% rating from reviews. Both Stone and Crowe later addressed the controversy. Crowe said the character was...

When talking of Ryan Gosling’s dating history, aside from Eva Mendes, most fans recall Kat Dennings, Olivia Wilde, or Rachel McAdams. But back in 2001, another iconic actress’s name was linked with the La La Land actor. It was rumored that Sandra Bullock was dating Gosling, their 16-year age gap shocked the world but the pair were besotted.
Around the same time, the actress was also filming a rom-com with Hugh Grant. Spending time on set gave birth to speculations that she was seeing the Emmy-nominated actor. Though she did not confirm her relationship with Gosling, she denied all allegations of dating her co-star. Some rumors were so exaggerated that they claimed The Proposal lead was pregnant, all of which she denied.

Reneé Rapp‘s highly anticipated main stage performance at Reading Festival 2024 on Sunday was cut short due to a series of technical mishaps and unexpected weather complications.
The 24-year-old singer-songwriter, making her first appearance at the iconic British music festival, faced immediate setbacks as she took the stage. Her microphone malfunctioned at the start, forcing a brief delay as technicians scrambled to resolve the issue.
Returning to enthusiastic chants from the crowd, Rapp launched into her set with “Talk Too Much” and “Poison Poison.” However, during her third song, “Bruises,” strong winds dislodged rainwater that had accumulated on the stage’s roof from the previous day’s downpour. The sudden deluge soaked Rapp, her band and their equipment, prompting another hasty exit.

I remember the moment I realized how much I love television. It was March 2, 2014, and for the first time in years, I skipped the Oscar telecast completely. I did it to watch a new episode of "True Detective," which was nearing the end of its phenomenal, influential, heavily-discussed first season. The show's grip on American pop culture that year was incredible: It won five Emmys, inspired countless parodies, and lit up the internet with theories and Easter egg hunts. People read Robert W. Chambers' "The King in Yellow" after the word "Carcosa" popped up in the show. Viewers made gifs and edits of every single shot of Matthew McConaughey's hilariously bleak protagonist. And, importantly, people in Hollywood clearly started searching for the next "True Detective."
In the years that followed the show's first season, a whole host of TV series appeared that clearly followed the "True Detective" rulebook: Slow-burn criminal investigations,...

The 2004 romantic drama “The Notebook” pays tribute to filmmaker John Cassavetes through its portrayal of intimate relationships that transcend time. While known for its love story between characters played by actors Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams, the film is also deeply connected to John Cassavetes and his wife and frequent collaborator Gena Rowlands.
Rowlands herself appears in “The Notebook” as the older version of the character Allie Calhoun. Her role serves to honor both her acclaimed prior work with Cassavetes as well as his legacy of independent filmmaking focused on authentic emotional depth.
One of Cassavetes’ most renowned films is 1974’s “A Woman Under the Influence,” which earned Rowlands an Oscar nomination for her raw and intimate performance as a housewife struggling with mental illness. Like “The Notebook,” it tackles complex themes of love, family, and the human experience.

Martin Scorsese remembered Gena Rowlands on Thursday as an “extraordinary” actress and celebrated her formative independent film work with John Cassavetes for being “inspirations to generations of filmmakers and actors.”
“There was no one else quite like her,” Scorsese said in a statement to press. “That’s the kind of observation that’s often made about people after they’re gone, but in Gena’s case it happens to be true.”
Rowlands died Wednesday after years of living with Alzheimer’s disease, a condition that her son and “The Notebook” filmmaker Nick Cassavetes only revealed two months prior. While commercially known best for playing the older, coincidentally Alzheimer’s-stricken version of the character played by Rachel McAdams in the 2004 romance, Rowlands will be remembered for her fearless, transformative performances through the 1970s and ’80s, including her Oscar-nominated leading roles in Cassavetes’ “A Woman Under the Influence” and “Gloria.”
