Places to Visit in New Zealand - Wellington

Wellington places to visit new zealand blog by travel insurance

Wellington is not only the Capital of New Zealand but is also considered the cultural, heritage and arts hub of our Country thanks to its fantastic mix of history, museums, shops, theatre, film and events.

You'll find plenty to see and do within Wellington's compact downtown area. Said to have more bars and restaurants per capita than New York, Wellington is widely celebrated for it's good taste. Enjoy cocktails or coffee and immerse yourself in the shops, cafes and bars of downtown.

Also located downtown on Wellington’s waterfront is the innovative national museum Te Papa.  A world leader in interactive experiences, New Zealand's history, art and people are showcased in fun and interesting exhibitions making it the most visited museum in Australasia.  Entry is free for most exhibitions.

Peter Jackson brought the world to Wellington’s doorstep by hosting the world premiere of The Hobbit and since then many international movies have been filmed here.  Make sure you visit Weta Studio Tours to get up close to the artistry and creativity behind filmmaking and discover the people, processes and props that make imaginary worlds a reality.

A restored, historic cable car travels from downtown Wellington up to the Botanic Gardens, where there are sweeping views of the city and harbour.  Or take a bus from the city to the summit of Mount Victoria for a 360-degree panorama of the city

On the outskirts of the city you will find Zealandia, home to some of New Zealand's rarest wildlife including kiwi and tuatara.  Or enjoy animal antics at Wellington Zoo - New Zealand's oldest zoological park.

Harbour cruises operate between the city, Matiu/Somes Island in the middle of Wellington Harbour and Days Bay, where you'll find seaside cafes and craft shops.

For the more adventurous, hire a sea kayak and paddle around the picturesque bays of Wellington Harbour or take a 4-wheel drive tour to the south coast and see a colony of New Zealand fur seals.

You can also mountain bike, take a bush walk and visit golden beaches along the coast.

Wellington is the main point of departure for tourists visiting the picturesque South Island, but we recommend you stay a couple of days and enjoy all the city has to offer before you sail off on your ferry.
