Have you ever wondered how much the British royal family actually gets paid in a year? Well, in the Sovereign Grant report shared by the royals this Wednesday, Prince William’s whopping salary was made public, and it turns out that in 2023, the Prince of Wales made just about $30 million.
The Integrated Annual Report was published by the Duchy of Cornwall, the 135,000-acre estate that manages the royal family’s properties across England. The report states that the duchy distributed a surplus of £23.6 million to William in his first year as the Duke of Cornwall—a title he took over from his father, King Charles III, after the king’s coronation in May 2023. (The prince does pay income tax on the money from the estate.)
The Duchy of Cornwall was established in 1337 by King Edward III and is used to provide an income for the heir to the throne. Currently, it serves William, wife Princess Catherine, and their three children, Prince George, 11, Princess Charlotte, 9, and Prince Louis, 6.
The fund covers the Wales family’s “official, charitable, and private activities.”
The annual Sovereign Grant report also disclosed the royal family’s travel spending for the year, showing that the royals paid a total of £4.2 million (about $5.4 million) for travel—including various international charter flights—in the financial year ending March 2024. That sum came out of the total £86.3 million Sovereign Grant that was given to the monarchy by the British government for the 2023–24 financial year.
