Mary Sewell
Since qualifying as a London guide in 1971, I have guided groups locally in London and as a tour manager I have escorted many groups in the British Isles and on the Continent. I am especially qualified to guide in the City, Clerkenwell & Islington and Docklands. Living in East London, I enjoy this rapidly-developing area - the City, East End, Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, Docklands and Greenwich where I was a part-time Promotions Consultant for the Thames Barrier Visitors Centre. I used to conduct regular "Regeneration" and "Olympics" tours of Stratford, site of the 2012 Olympic Games, and the Royal Docks. I often cycle in London, and am happy to conduct tours of London by bicycle.
I have a degree in Economic Geography and History from the London School of Economics and a Diploma in Garden History from Birkbeck College, London University. As a member of the London Gardens Trust, I take great interest in the research and restoration of London's historic gardens and the creation of new parks. I am a qualified York Minster and Wells Cathedral guide. I enjoy special interest groups, especially architects, town planners and garden lovers.
I have accompanied groups further afield - to China and India. I spent two years travelling around the world as a Woman Assistant Purser for P & O, mainly on board ss Oriana. Previously, I worked in tourism in Switzerland, and as an Information Officer at the London Tourist Board. When at home, I enjoy London entertainments such as the theatre, cinema, concerts, restaurants, art galleries and exhibitions and when abroad I always took every opportunity to discover new art galleries and gardens, or to revisit those I already knew.
