One of the big problems former manager Nick Daws faced was trying to find the Iron’s best starting XI.
So the question for Stuart McCall is, has he managed to find the magic formula to get the best out of the players at his disposal.
McCall got his first victory as manager of the Iron on Saturday against AFC Wimbledon and although one win does not mean he has cracked it, the team he fielded was pretty close to what you could probably say is his strongest starting XI.
Yes there are problems in defence but McCall can only play with the cards he is dealt.
Missing Jordan Clarke and Rory McArdle means that James Perch and Charlie Goode have stepped in.
In addition Cameron Borthwick-Jackson will now be missing for the next couple of weeks and Lewis Butroid is the most likely to take his place.
The defence has not been helped by the fact they have not had a settled back line since the opening day and that is not likely to change any time soon with a few players having short-term injuries.
But with the players available a back line of James Perch, Goode, Cameron Burgess and Butroid is probably the strongest you are going to get at this moment in time.
The midfield at the moment looks very strong.
Matthew Lund and Funso Ojo looks like they are forming a formidable partnership in the middle of the pitch, with the Belgian getting fitter with every game and Lund also improving with every passing minute.
This was demonstrated by Lund’s pass for Josh Morris’s second goal against the Dons.
Ryan Colclough has arguably produced two man of the match performances in the last two matches, cementing his place on the right, while Morris reminded everybody what he was capable of on Saturday scoring two superb goals.
Although some still question his inclusion, what he brought to the team in terms of the goals shows how important he can be.
There are not much better than Josh Morris at his very best.
Due to this, the man to miss out has been Andy Dales.
The former non-league man had an impressive start to life in League One, and he can count himself very unlucky not to find himself in the starting line-up at the moment.
Upfront Ike Ugbo and Lee Novak look to be the first choice pairing.
Ugbo did nothing to harm those chances with a fantastic performance on Saturday, winning the free kick for the first goal, scoring the third and generally causing the Dons defence problems.
For me I would give Stephen Humphrys a chance to partner Ugbo.
Lee Novak struggled to have an impact on the game on Saturday and I think Humphrys has been unlucky to lose his place in the side.
He scored a very well taken goal at Coventry followed by a superb strike at home to Doncaster.
When he came on at the weekend he did well to hold up play and nearly scored another fantastic goal when an attempted chip forced Tom King into a fingertip save.
The ingredients for McCall are there but they just need to be moulded successfully.
