I've been along for the ride for all of lovelace's releases, with a couple of them having reached far into my soul to rearrange a few things. This last installment of You Are Your Own Fairy Tale has firmly joined those titles than I feel the most connected to.
I had to pause multiple times to put this down and walk it out. I find so much kinship and sisterhood in lovelace's words, and this one didn't pull it's punches.
It is so magical to feel seen and heard in a perfect stranger's words. To feel validated and respected and understood.
I can't wait to add this one to my shelves and to see what else Lovelace brings to the table....more

Sometimes fate is kind enough to deliver what I like to call "'Right book at the right time." So, for the record, here's my note of thanks to the universe for this one. I was in sore need of it.
I was quite surprised to find myself getting teary eyed at multiple points in this book. It wasn't until I finished the very last sentence of the acknowledgements that the tears fell and I felt a near cathartic release. Relief. This read like relief.
Like a conversation with someone who knows you, gets you, truly understands you. Someone who puts their phone away as soon as you sit down because there's nothing on there that could be more interesting that anything you could have to say.
What an absolute breath of fresh air in a genre that has long started to feel oversaturated and often derivative and even performative....more

I enjoyed Lovelace's first two collections immensely, but there has since been a disconnect for me with her work. I found myself getting lost in the mechanic aspect of just reading through these and at first I thought the issue lied with me, so I set the book down to pick up at another time. Quite a few tries later and I'm sorry to say the issue did not lie with me.
This collection felt really watered down and derivative of not only Lovelace`s previous work, but quippy and catchy Instagram type post and texts that one ecounters about 20 times a day. I never got that feeling of being absorbed in a bigger, more overarching experience that should come with a collection of poems. I could feel myself forgetting the last poem as I started reading the next one....more

I struggled a lot with this one. I am always eager for stories from immigrants, it's such a unique perspective and truly singular experience - no two are the same. I crave to read about more stories like that of my father and mother, to see how they translate to other cultures and other mother tongues.
I failed to connect with this one, I didn't feel like there was a clear reasoning for the order of the poems, there was no natural progression of the 'story' for me....more

I first heard of Rachel Wiley when her poem "10 Honest Thoughts on Being Loved By A Skinny Boy" went viral 7 years ago. I was in my freshman year of college and I remember being in awe of this strong and honest woman.
Fat Girl Finishing School brings back that feeling with a beautiful collection of perfectly human and genuine moments, told through Wiley's very fresh perspective.
This the book for that bad day. The hand to hold your when when you feel alone. Self love and self acceptace is a daily battle, a constant struggle, there's a learning curve and it takes practice. I find that learning from people like Wiley helps me an enormous amount and makes me feel less alone....more

A completely novel approach to the Retelling genre. For those of us who grew up loving fairy tales but always craved more. This fits perfectly with Lovelace's Women Are Some Kind of Magic Series, which is high praise in itself.
I often say that we tend to be much kinder to the people we love than we are to ourselves. We would never say half the stuff we tell ourselves in our worst moments to our loved one - and isn't that really telling?
This book is like a conversation with a loved one, it strips away the harshness we often inflict on ourselves and softens the edges, soothes the hurt.
I can't wait to see what's in store for the rest of this series....more
