This book follows Nada, a 20-something Toronto Muslim girl who is stuck. She's stuck with her job, her parents, her home-life etc. etc. As every Muslim girl's story goes, her mom and friends are trying to get her married but Nada's not all that interested (and for reasons you might not be able to guess) ...more

matt haig literally takes on the most extensive topics like life decisions, regrets, and parallel universes, and does it with incredible tact.
it follows a woman named nora who is especially unhappy with her current life situation and finds no fulfillment in anything. events pass that make her find herself in a library suspended between time with endless books, each containing another life she can slip into.
each new life nora gets to experience in these parallel universes leaves her with a new, deeper understanding of life, choice, and her personal regrets.
i personally thought this book wrecked my life because wow did i feel DUMB when the parallel universe/science-y stuff came into play. matt haig's brain is so powerful to encompass all this philosophical information and then put it into coherent thoughts!!! i could never!!
"What do I do now?" "You open the book and turn to the first page."
on a personal level, i really enjoyed this book. like the conversations it brought up felt like it was JUST PERFECT for my current life state. it made me think so deeply about so many topics especially on making choices and feeling regret
there were many moments of this book that felt repetitive to me and yes, i guess that's the whole point of parallel universe realities but there were times i felt it was hard to keep reading and easy to put it down
the ending of the book was amazing!!! the perfect ending to nora's story!! any other ending would have left me with endless disappointment so im glad matt haig pulled through.
i'm definitely going to pick up the author's other books bc he is clearly incredibly smart and talented and knows how to give me a proper existential crisis

in the acknowledgements, emily henry says she didn't mean for this book to be "homage to When Henry Met Sally," but I NEVER watched When Henry Met Sally, so I can't compare it and, frankly, i don't believe that it can top this masterpiece, so there.

For all of you who have been debating over whether friends-to-lovers vs. enemies-to-lovers is superior, let me raise you,
lovers-to-enemies-to-lovers
I promise, it doesn’t get better than this
✨ everything I say in this review is 100% factual and based on science as I have reread the book and tried and tested all the theories ✨
You Deserve Each Other is the story of Naomi Westfield and Nicholas Rose, who are engaged to get married and the absolute perfect couple.
The problem is, they Cannot. Stand. Each. Other.
“He’s my only ally. He’s my worst enemy.
Naomi and Nicholas’s relationship has been dwindling down for quite some time. Naomi feels like she is acting all the time. Pretending that their relationship is Prefect!! That everything Couldn’t be Better!!
But as their wedding date approaches, she’s not so sure she can envision herself getting married to Nicholas anymore
In attempts to save herself from having to pick up the massive, growing wedding bill, Naomi concocts a plan to make Nicholas’s life an absolute nightmare until he finally gives in and breaks up with her
Little does she know, her acting skills aren’t that great and Nicholas has other plans in mind
“But I've got news for Nicholas Benjamin Rose: if he thinks I'm not the biggest waste of time that's ever happened to him, he's got another think coming.”
The Relationship
My new favourite favourite favourite thing to read about is couples who have to fight for each other. (bring those recommendations onnnnn!!) We all love seeing the beginning of a relationship where everything is happy and cutesy and fun, but after the couple gets together, the book ends and we get a stamp that says they live happily ever after
But I don’t want that
I want to see the real stuff, the couples who fight and argue and annoy each other and then find a way to make it right because to me, that’s just SO REAL and GENIUNE and SPECIAL
Seeing two people get together is fun but seeing two people fight to stay together is Magical
“Your body’s here, but your head’s somewhere else. You’ve gone and left me all alone.”
Don’t get me wrong, this book is lighthearted for the most part.
It’s filled with jokes and banter and characters who do outrageous things. But my favourite thing to find upon reread was how the characters went from working so hard to break their relationship to genuinely trying to make it work
And seeing those vulnerable moments where they allowed the barriers to come down and stopped all the stupid pranking and bickering to just TELL the other person how they feel and what they want
SO BEAUTIFUL YOU GUYS, SO BEAUTIFUL
“He shouldn’t be this stunned by a nice gesture. It should be a given, but it’s not, and that’s my fault. I’ve been withholding nice gestures to punish him for not giving me enough nice gestures, and just look at how well that attitude’s panned out for us.”
aaaaaaaaaaa emotions!!!!!!
And then there’s the really adorable, really sweet moment that have me ...more

Not only am I ridiculously scared of humans after reading what she experienced, but just the sheer idea!! that a mother could do that to their kid!!! oh my god!!!!
anyways, this book is obviously a work of fiction and not based off the true story or the people involved and so i will judge this fiction for what i've read
- to start off, i really liked the development of the atmosphere. it has these very haunting and eerie vibes from the start of the book. everyone is an unreliable narrator and so it only makes everything more unknown - we get to see dual perspective, from Rose Gold in the past after her mother was convicted and sent to prison and her mother's perspective in the present when she is released and brought home by her daughter - i think the way the author was able to capture those deep-seated emotions of trauma and pain and anger was incredible. i felt very connected to the characters, their experiences, and their story - i was very much gripped from the beginning of the book, there are so many elements at play and you really don't know what the heck is going on or who to trust - basically, everyone!! needs!! therapy!! - now for the complaints, as the story progressed, i became more and more interested to see how the twist would shake the story up - however, i was not Shaken by the reveals - they were 'shocking' enough to get an eyebrow raise out of me but that was about it. i'm not quite sure what went wrong, i just found it a little underwhelming - i think what happened was that i stopped feeling sympathy for the characters (because theyre SO BLOODY MESSED UP!!!!) around the halfway point and so their motives didn't really make sense or appeal to me - (view spoiler)[ managing trauma by dealing with abuse in healthy ways is 100% Good but using the physical and mental abuse that someone suffered against them to exact revenge is SICK (hide spoiler)] - it was definitely an interesting book but just one that didn't do it for me :/
“Because that’s what mothers do. We shelter the hardest truths from our children to keep them safe. We take the hit so they don’t have to feel the pain.”

I don't know how to review this book aside from saying the character depth and realism and the way the stories and lives crossed paths was absolutely incredible. It's so clever and well written and explores while giving commentary on some really pressing issues of race, internalized racism, and identity.
also i'm not well spoken and prefer to keyboard smash rather than analyze the book with big words so i will leave you with that fdlkjfklsdjfl
