Every summer Deobard travels with his mother to an ancient castle where he's tutored by the castle's caretaker. Much to Deobard's surprise, his lessons become valuable when he discovers an enchanted book in the castle's forbidden tower.
Within the book's pages lie spells that come in handy when the tower's monsters attack.
But Deobard isn't the only one who wants the book, and some things are deadlier than monsters.
This delightful fantasy novella introduces the series “THE EVERLASTING THRONE.” Our feckless hero Deobard is seventeen years old, living with his mother since his father “disappeared” when he was very young. He studies with the Archivists in the city, and during summers at the isolated castle, he is under the tutelage of the caretaker, whom he considers a fanciful and out-of-touch old man. For several years he has tried every summer to enter “the forbidden tower,” unsuccessfully until now. Suddenly, after the caretaker allows two men and a young girl to enter the Tower, Deobard can sneak in. Eventually he finds a small library and a single book set out, as if purposely. Stealing the book, he returns to his room, only to discover that not only can he read the text, when he returns to the tower he can incant spells. Major change for a young man who thinks history is bunk, dead languages are useless, and magic doesn't exist. The authors suffuse this story with an unending vein of subtle humour, enabling the reader to both acknowledge the characters as fallible, and simultaneously to empathise with their quests.
Book of Elements is well written and is told in third-person. This is a prequel novella and is a great start to a new fantasy series.
The story is told from the point-of-view of a young man named Deobard who has been living a rather isolated life with only his mother and teachers for company. The story begins in a remote castle where Deobard is forced to spend his summers alone with his mother and the castle's caretaker, who insists on Deobard learning about things the young man doesn't believe exist (namely magic and mythical creatures). When Deobard follows the caretaker to one of the castle's towers he had been forbidden to enter, his adventures begin.
This story is filled with action and adventure. If you enjoy epic fantasy stories filled with magic then this story is definitely for you.
This 17-year-old young man has led a very sheltered life, and he finds his caretaker-tutor to be a doddering old fool who teaches legends in a harsh and mean-spirited manner. Ever since he can remember, he has been intrigued by the tower but unable to enter it. Then one summer day he sneaks in behind travelers and discovers a book in plain sight that was meant for him, according to the opening pages. The books proves useful against monsters and challenges in the tower, and it becomes obvious it is a much-sought tome. At the end of the story he discovers a shocking secret as he sets off for great adventure and hard-won wisdom. The story is too short to get a great feel for the author's writing, but I enjoyed what I read. This would be a great story for kids and teens as well as an introduction to the series for adults.
An exciting start to the story. I'm very much looking forward to "Sorcerer's Oath" which should be coming out quite soon, lucky me! In this prequel novella Oscar and Green have given us quite the adventure and I'm keen to see what Deobard gets up to in the next book. I don't want to give anything away and it's a pretty quick read. If you enjoy fantasy at all you should certainly give it a go, I don't think you'll regret it.
