Children's author, novelist, and poet Reeve Lindbergh is the daughter of world-renowned aviator Charles Lindbergh and his wife, the talented writer Anne Morrow Lindbergh.
The story is a rhyming tale describing early morning just outside a girl's window and all the commotion going on. With enough repetition to encourage young listeners to chime in, the story describes how the cow is joined by a goat, then a sheep and so on until six farm animals become a crowd and cause some chaos. The illustrations are very well done watercolors. The story comes to life with the turn of each page. I would recommend this book to three to 8 year olds. I am sure it will become a favorite.
Lindbergh's breezy rhyme describes early-morning commotion just outside a girl's window. With just enough repetition to encourage young listeners to chime in, the verse tells how the cow is joined by a goat, then a sheep and so on until six antic animals become a "crowd in the road" and create some good-natured chaos.
Along with the fun rhythm throughout, the ending made the book. I liked the way it also went through the routine of the morning and kept time along the way.

Great for morning routine and rhyming words! Cute book for younger students.
As a little girl gets ready for school she notices a cow in the road. In ryhming fashion, she sees a cow, goat, goose, sheep, horse, etc. all in the road. She tells about the time she sees each animal and then she goes out to see the animals.
Rhyming, time, and pictures to show the little girl getting ready for school-these are all elements that all children can relate to.
This is a classic in our family. I'm 52 and still love this book. My daughter is 21 and watching the cattle parade in Ft. Worth and she sent me a text, "Dad, There is a cow in the road but it is quarter til 12." The book is a part of our family culture for generations. It is a must have in your children's collection.
A wonderful rhyming story -- from the time she gets up to catching the bus, a menagerie of animals appear in the road! Enjoyable! incredible! Who would have dreamed that getting ready for school could be sooooo much fun!
Very happy book about a cow blocking the road. Before you know it, all the animals are in the way. Told through rhyming, this book is very light and bubbly. Good for a quick read or even sequencing events.
I recently discovered this book at my library and I really like it. The rhyming is excellent. I think it would be a fun read-aloud. Kids can join in on "And the cow says, Moo!" throughout, which would be great for preschoolers. But older kids who are already in school will appreciate the ending.
I bought this book to read to my little granddaughter when she is older and I know she will love it. It is a fun book to read with lots of action and rhyming and great illustrations.
this is a great readaloud! themes include telling time, going to school, and cows of course. repetitive structure provides good refrains for the audience.
One the best children's rhyming stories ever. If you read to kids a lot you know a good one when you don't cringe when they bring it to you for the millionth time!!
I really like how this book goes through times and what you have to do in the morning to get ready for school. The story is silly which keeps interesting for children.
Book #38 of 2023. "There's a Cow in the Road" by Reeve Lindbergh with pictures by Tracey Campbell Pearson. 4/5 rating.
This is a premiere children's book with great pictures, and some fun with a lot of farm animals.
I basically can't say no to free books, so when I saw some this morning at school, I looked through them and found this little gem. This would be a lot of fun to read to children. I would say the only real issue is there wasn't exactly a moral...or plot...or nearly any story. Haha, though we're talking about kid's books, so good illustrations and a fun book mend all thematic issues!
Just whatever you do when you wake up and see a cow in the road, beware of what its next "moo" might do...
(Also, I definitely am counting this, if a whole textbook only counts as 1 book, you better believe I'm counting the occasional children's book!!)
When Reeve Lindbergh has a quality illustrator, her books are much better than when she doesn’t. Pearson is definitely one of those illustrators who does quality work, and she especially does well with silly and humorous storybooks. This is definitely a silly book, and a lot of fun. I thought it was a nice touch that the little girl was just going about her daily routine while all of this was happening just outside her window. Really adorable book.
I wasn't particularly fond of this the first time I read it, but today I read it aloud to my cat, who was huddling next to me in fear because the house was being attacked by the cleaning ladies. We both enjoyed the singsong rhythm and silly little story and calmed down a little after this and 8 or 9 other picture books....
This is a really cute story, with rhymes, which always charm me. The only things I didn't like were the one "Gosh sakes" and the ending with a school bus, since I'm a fan of homeschooling. :)
Loved almost everything about this book. Had there been a bit more of an explanation as to why animals kept appearing in the road I’d have probably rated this a 5-star.
This book was bought to replace the original one I bought for my son when he was young. Unfortunately it got lost in moving. I have searched for years to find a copy so I could read my son's favorite book to his son. Although Dawson is only about 5 months old he loved the colorful pages and was trying to eat it. I love the rhythm of this book and it's very fun to read aloud to a child. I wish they would bring this book back. I read this last night again for the 1000th time. 😀
If you like reading rhyming poetry, you will love this for your preschooler to elementary age child, grandchildren, nursery school children or any young child that loves to be read to.
