Yesterday, Her Royal Highness, Princess Anne, joined a reception to mark 10 years since Great Britain hosted the London 2012 Olympic Games.
The Royal Family's Twitter account shared words from Her Royal Highness: “Hosting the Olympic Games is a privilege, and a responsibility, and it’s not easy to do it well. I think we can look back after ten years, and say that London did it exceptionally well. “We owe a huge debt of gratitude to everybody who made it possible.”
Back in 1976, The Princess Royal was the first British royal to compete in the Olympics. In the Montreal Olympics, Princess Anne took part in the three day equestrian event, where she rode a horse named Goodwill, who belonged to her mother, Her Majesty the Queen. In 1988 The Princess Royal was appointed a Member of the International Olympic Committee, and currently serves as the Honorary President of Team GB.
Princess Anne's daughter, Zara Phillips, followed in her mother's equestrian footsteps when competing in the same three day equestrian event at the 2012 London Olympics. In what must have been a very precious moment for both Princess Anne and Zara Phillips, Great Britain won silver in the event and The Princess Royal presented the team, including her daughter Zara, with their medals.
The Olympic Games in London are held as a very special memory for many people over the country. In 2012, Great Britain won 65 medals in total at the Olympic Games - 29 gold, 17 silver, and 19 bronze.
