Gloucestershire's Slimbridge Wetland Centre, nestled on the Eastern estuary of the River Severn, offers a delightful day out for families with a penchant for bird spotting and wildlife safaris. The centre is teeming with activities and events that will captivate children who have an interest in nature.

For those passionate about wildlife, now is an ideal time to visit the reserve. Recently, several birds have been observed forming post-breeding flocks, including Green Sandpipers, Lapwing, Teal and Curlew.

The reserve boasts 13 hides, providing optimal viewing points to observe the diverse species that frequent the reserve throughout the year. The Estuary Tower Hide is equipped with a lift, and the heated Peng Observatory hosts commentated feeds around 4pm daily.

The Summer Walkway is open until late summer, where you can explore the sights and inhabitants of the Severn Estuary, including amphibians, dragonflies and butterflies. It's wheelchair accessible and kids can learn through fact finding missions and fun challenges on the free 'Wetland Heroes' app whilst exploring the centre.

Children can also visit the Tundra Hut, where they can dress up as an Arctic researcher. They can become a real birdwatcher and use binoculars and telescopes to identify different species.

Slimbridge is conveniently located near the M5. The reserve has a large, free car park with six electric vehicle charge points.

The Kingfisher Kitchen on-site is open every day, as well as a shop selling gifts, books, toys and bird care. You can also stay overnight at Slimbridge at Bewick's Lodge, part of the former home of Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust's founder Sir Peter Scott.

Tickets cost £17.22 for adults, £11.36 for juniors and £15.40 for students, those who are 65+ or those who are unemployed. Children under four and carers assisting disabled visitors go free.

You can become a member of the Wetland Wildlife Trust from £4.50 a month for one adult, granting access to the ten sites across the country, including Slimbridge. There are also family memberships available for £7.25 a month.
