An expert warns against using too many skin care products

The right skin care routine can help hydrate the skin, reduce signs of ageing and improve overall complexion.

Following a rule of three will ensure you get the most out of your routine, founder of Sphagnum De-Lux Lisa Kavanagh said.

She advised not using more than three products on your face for any anti-ageing routine. Using too many products could actually cause irritation and signs of ageing.

The expert explained: "The rule of three is crucial in skin care, as using too many products at once can lead to chronic inflammation which is a significant trigger to skin ageing.

"This can result in a breakdown of collagen and elastin, which can cause wrinkles and sagging."

Collagen is naturally produced in the body and it helps keep skin tight and youthful, however, the natural supplies in our body decrease with time.

Supplements and skin care products can be used to slow the effects of this, although there are mixed reviews on how effective these are.

Lisa explained overusing skin care products can speed up the breakdown of collagen and cause obvious signs of ageing.

Using a cleanser, moisturiser and SPF is a good place to start when forming a skin care routine. The expert shared another tip for looking younger is to remember to apply skin care products around your eyes.

She continued: "The skin around the eyes is one of the thinnest across the body which is why it’s essential to regularly use cream or serum.

"Not taking care of the skin around the eyes can cause wrinkles, bags and sagging."

Britons have been warned of washing their face using water that is too hot as it can speed up signs of ageing.

The expert said: "Using piping hot water can make your skin extremely dry which can damage the skin barrier and cause wrinkling and lines.

"Make sure only to use hot water occasionally in order to help open up pores, otherwise, stick to lukewarm for daily cleanses."
