It's still tough to buy a PS5 disc drive for your digital console, after a couple of months of low stock across the US and UK. There's a sliver of hope on the shelves right now, with Amazon US offering the official drive at its normal $79.99 MSRP, though the UK is still looking a little dry.
PS5 disc drive stock has been hard to come by since just before the PS5 Pro landed on the market in November last year. It's been tricky to find this accessory in general, but things had levelled out before the all-digital mid-cycle refresh hit the shelves. Since then, it's been all but impossible to find lasting stock of the add-on, so you do need to be in the right place at the right time to come up with a win.
That's why I'd head to Amazon as soon as you can - this is a rare stock drop for the online retailer (it's been quiet for months now), and only Pro members had access to GameStop's previous drops. That means things could move particularly quickly here. In the UK, it's worth keeping in touch with Argos, which sorts its stock by postcode therefore giving you a slightly better shot, or Currys, which has seen more restocks overall.
The official PS5 disc drive costs $79.99 / £99.99 and is a required PS5 accessory for anyone who wants to play physical games on a PS5 Pro or a digital edition PS5 Slim. The combined price of a PS5 Slim Digital Edition and a PS5 disc drive does exceed the cost of a full-fat PS5 Slim (with the disc drive permanently attached), so if you're on the cusp of picking up a console it's well worth spending the extra on the main release.
